Caring for Your Seedlings 🌱 Outdoors

To move seedlings outside, you can gradually expose them to outdoor conditions through a process called "hardening off". This helps them adjust to the changes in temperature and sunlight they'll experience in the garden.

Steps for moving seedlings outside

1. Prepare the soil

Remove weeds and add compost to your garden beds. Loosen and aerate the soil.

2. Harden off the seedlings

About 10 days before transplanting, put the seedlings outside in a protected area. Start with a couple of hours of exposure each day, and gradually increase the time. Bring them back inside at night.

3. Transplant the seedlings

Dig holes that are larger than the pots the seedlings are in. Place the seedlings in the holes and tamp them down. Water well.

4. Protect the seedlings

If it's windy, use plant covers or inverted pots to protect the seedlings.

5. Water and fertilize

Soak the soil right after transplanting to help settle the roots. A few days later, give each seedling a cup of starter fertilizer.

Tips for moving seedlings outside

Don't put seedlings outside on windy days or when temperatures are below 45°F.

Transplant when there are clouds to reduce stress on the plants.

Keep the soil moist during the hardening-off period

... Read moreCaring for seedlings involves more than just planting; it's crucial to prepare them for outdoor conditions through a method known as hardening off. This gradual acclimatization process ensures that your delicate seedlings adjust to their new environment, reducing transplant shock and promoting healthy growth. Begin by preparing your garden beds: remove any weeds, loosen the soil, and enrich it with compost to provide essential nutrients. After preparing the soil, start the hardening off process about 10 days before you plan to transplant your seedlings. This involves exposing them to outdoor conditions gradually. Start by placing them in a protected area for just a couple of hours per day, slowly increasing their exposure time while bringing them indoors at night to protect them from cold temperatures. When transplanting, dig larger holes than the containers your seedlings are currently in. Make sure to tamp down the soil around them and give them a generous watering to help them settle. Once planted, protect your seedlings from harsh winds by using plant covers or even inverted pots. Proper care after planting includes regular watering to keep the soil moist and applying a starter fertilizer a few days later to kickstart their growth. Be mindful of the weather conditions, as it's best not to transplant on windy days or when temperatures drop below 45°F. Additionally, choosing overcast days for transplanting can help reduce stress on your plants, ensuring they thrive in their new home.
