New Dust Bath

Chinchilla fur, however, is incredibly dense, and water baths can actually be harmful and cause hypothermia or fungal infections, so dust is their natural and essential way to stay fresh and fungus-free! For chinchillas, a quality dust bath isn't just a luxury; it's a fundamental necessity for their health and happiness. Their fur is so fine and packed (about 50-80 hairs per follicle!) that it can easily get oily, matted, or clumpy if not properly maintained. Dust baths help absorb those excess oils and moisture, keeping their coats silky soft, clean, and preventing skin issues. I recently got a super cute wooden dust bath house for my boys, and they absolutely adore it! It’s sturdy, well-made, and looks great in their enclosure. When choosing a dust bath setup, look for something safe and spacious enough for your chinchilla to roll around comfortably. I usually offer their bath for about 10-15 minutes, a few times a week, or whenever I notice their fur looking a bit dull.
