I made this a few months ago. I was thinking of trying again I don’t really feel it gives of Oka’s vibe🤷🏾♀️

As an artist, there's something incredibly fun and challenging about taking a beloved character and giving them a fresh, new look. My recent attempt with Oka Ruto from Yandere Simulator got me thinking a lot about what truly defines her, and how hard it can be to capture that essence in a redesign. Oka Ruto is such a unique character in the Yandere Simulator universe. Her shy demeanor, combined with her fascination for the occult and her connection to the 'spider' theme, makes her instantly recognizable. When I started my redesign project, my main goal was to keep her core identity while exploring new visual elements. I really wanted to create a fan-made redesign that felt both original and true to her spirit. One of the biggest challenges was deciding which aspects of her original anime-style design to keep and which to change. Her signature dark hair and the overall spooky aesthetic are non-negotiable, but I wondered, how could I enhance them? I experimented with different clothing options, moving from her typical school uniform to a more stylized appearance. For instance, I envisioned her with a blue top and a long skirt, but then decided to add some purple spiderweb tights to really lean into her thematic elements. And of course, no Oka redesign would be complete without a nod to her supernatural interests, so I included a purple book with a pentagram – a small detail that hopefully adds to her mystique. I also spent a lot of time on her facial features and makeup. I felt that a touch of dark makeup could exaggerate her mysterious vibe without making her unrecognizable. The full-body illustration allowed me to play with proportions and pose, trying to convey her characteristic shyness mixed with an underlying intensity. After finishing it, I put my redesign next to the original Oka Ruto. This side-by-side comparison is always so crucial! It helps highlight what works and what doesn't. Honestly, I'm still not 100% convinced I nailed her exact 'vibe.' Sometimes, a character’s essence is so subtle that a slight shift can alter it entirely. I think this is a common struggle for many artists who create Yansim redesigns or any character fanart. For anyone else out there thinking of doing an Oka Ruto art piece or a redesign of another Yandere Simulator rival, here are a few tips I've learned: Deconstruct the Original: What are the absolute must-have elements? For Oka, it's her shyness, her dark aesthetic, and her interest in the occult. Identify Core Themes: What symbols or motifs are associated with the character? Spiders for Oka, obviously! Experiment with Stylization: Don't be afraid to try different clothing, hairstyles, or color palettes, but keep the core character in mind. Get Feedback: Share your work! Other fans can offer invaluable perspectives on whether you've captured the character's spirit. I'd love to hear your thoughts on my Oka redesign. What elements do you think are essential for her character? Have you tried redesigning any Yandere Simulator characters yourself? Let me know!
