Chengdu has a panda that only lies down all day… 🐼

Arriving at Yangtianwo Square, the first thing that catches your eye is this super famous selfie panda 🐼📸.

It’s just lying right in the middle of the square, casually “holding up a phone” like its only job in life is to take photos 📱. The whole vibe is basically: living its best life, doing nothing 😂✨.

And the best part is, it’s located right next to Dujiangyan, so it’s a really easy stop if you’re already visiting the area 📍.

This panda is actually an art installation designed by a Chinese artist 🎨, inspired by Chengdu’s identity as the “city of pandas” 🐼. It cleverly blends modern selfie culture with the iconic panda image, which is why it feels both funny and relatable 😆.

What makes it even better is the pose — lying flat on the ground while taking a selfie 📸. Honestly, it feels like this panda enjoys life more than we do. You can’t help but think: this panda has the best life ever. Just sunbathing ☀️, taking photos, and being admired all day, no work needed 😂.

The square itself is very open and spacious 🌿, making it a great place to walk around and take photos. Almost every angle works, especially if you try to recreate a “selfie with the panda” shot 📷✨.

If you’re visiting Chengdu or heading to Dujiangyan, this is definitely a fun and easy stop to add to your itinerary 📍. It’s lighthearted, unique, and very Chengdu — one of those places that will just make you smile 😊🐼

... Read moreDuring my visit to Chengdu, stumbling upon the selfie panda at Yangtianwo Square immediately brought a smile to my face. This larger-than-life panda art piece perfectly captures the laid-back spirit that Chengdu is known for. What I found especially charming was how the panda, lying casually on the ground holding a phone, merges traditional cultural symbolism with the contemporary selfie craze — a brilliant nod to how modern technology intersects with local identity. The square itself offers plenty of space to leisurely wander and find the perfect angle for a creative selfie alongside the panda. It’s not just a photo opportunity; it’s a reminder to take life a little easier and enjoy the present moment. I appreciated how this installation invites interaction — many visitors, including myself, tried recreating the panda’s relaxed pose, making it a shared experience full of laughter. Another highlight is the panda’s proximity to Dujiangyan, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its ancient irrigation system. This makes Yangtianwo Square a convenient stop that combines cultural exploration with lighthearted fun. If you’re planning a trip around Chengdu, I definitely suggest adding the selfie panda to your itinerary as a break from traditional sightseeing. The panda’s pose also symbolizes a modern lifestyle trend embraced especially by younger generations: valuing leisure and self-expression. In addition, the installation brilliantly uses humor and familiarity to connect with tourists and locals alike, resonating deeply with Chengdu’s reputation as the City of Pandas. Overall, this art piece isn’t just about the visual appeal; it’s a cultural statement wrapped in a playful package. It left me thinking about how art and everyday life mingle to create moments of joy — something that every traveler can appreciate. Whether you’re an art lover, a panda enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun photo spot, the selfie panda at Yangtianwo Square delivers something memorable and uniquely Chengdu.

for the Chengdu Panda Base
1. Pay the 30 yuan/ pax for the shuttle bus! 🚌 - the research base is HUGE! To save your time and energy, the shuttle service is unlimited and so worth it. But be prepared to queue at peak hours! 2. We came on a Monday - No crowds, and we managed to see panda cubs taking their first steps!
