... Read moreYou know, Meridian, Mississippi, is often celebrated for its beautiful Bonita Lakes, and for good reason! It’s a fantastic spot for a walk, a picnic, or just enjoying nature. But what truly surprised me on my last visit was how much incredible art you can discover right in the city itself, making a trip to Bonita Lakes even more enriching. I always love finding those hidden gems, and Meridian's murals truly delivered!
After spending a peaceful morning by the lakes, I decided to venture into downtown Meridian, and that’s when the art trail truly unfolded for me. It felt like every corner held a new surprise. I remember turning onto a street and being immediately captivated by a striking mural of a woman in a red dress, holding a matching umbrella. The way the artist captured that moment, almost as if she was walking right out of the wall, was just beautiful. It made me wonder what other stories the city had to tell through its art.
And the discoveries just kept coming! I spotted another fantastic piece – a stylized fox, all earthy browns, blues, and whites, painted on a really cool distressed wall. It had such a whimsical feel. Then, a bit further along, a more somber but equally powerful mural of a person playing an upright bass, with those cool blue and white accents against a brick wall. Each piece felt so distinct, yet they all contributed to the vibrant pulse of Meridian.
The variety is truly astounding. There was this one mural featuring a man with spiky hair and a beard, rendered with such intricate detail. And for something a bit more playful, I loved the mural depicting a child pulling the tail of a large, abstract horse – the colors (white, yellow, blue) just popped! You can't help but smile when you see something so imaginative. The grandeur continued with a massive, powerful bull mural, painted in stunning shades of blue and grey, exuding strength and presence.
I also stumbled upon some truly unique pieces, like a mural on a corner wall that skillfully blended a woman's face with flowing hair on one side and an abstract, serpentine creature on the other – such a creative fusion! And it wasn’t just large-scale murals. I even found some charming chalk art on the pavement, depicting a woman's face with tree branches and leaves forming her hair. It’s those little unexpected finds that make exploring so rewarding. Another favorite was a vibrant man's face with a prominent mustache, using bold brushstrokes and a mix of blues, yellows, and pinks. And don't forget the whimsical, colorful fox head on a tiled wall, an absolute delight.
My advice? Don’t just stop at Bonita Lakes. While it’s a serene escape, take some time to wander through Meridian's streets. You can drive around, but walking truly lets you absorb the artistic atmosphere. It’s a wonderful way to see the city from a different perspective and find pieces that resonate with you. Trust me, pairing the natural beauty of Bonita Lakes with the urban artistry of Meridian makes for an unforgettable trip!
