Gundam Watch

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a bit more about this RX-78-2 Gundam watch face illustration I posted. It truly holds a special place for me because it was one of my very first significant projects back in 2019 when I was diving deep into learning Adobe Illustrator. It wasn't just an assignment; it was a passion project that helped me understand the power of digital art tools. Choosing the RX-78-2 Gundam was a no-brainer for me. As a huge Mobile Suit Gundam fan, the original Gundam is iconic, a symbol of determination and classic mecha design. I wanted to capture that essence in a functional, yet artistic, way – hence the idea of a watch face. The challenge was to condense such a mighty machine into a small, readable design while retaining its recognizable features. My vision for this watch design was to make it distinctly Gundam, right down to the details. For the watch face itself, I knew the Gundam's head had to be the centerpiece. It's instantly recognizable and has so much character. I spent a good amount of time ensuring the proportions and colors were just right, staying true to the original design. Around the head, I added a detailed background showing parts of the Gundam's upper body, giving it a sense of scale and depth, as if the watch face is a window into the mobile suit itself. Then came the strap – I wanted it to complement the Gundam's colors but also stand out. That's why I went with a vibrant light blue strap. To add more character and tie it back to the specific mobile suit, I incorporated a bright yellow buckle, reminiscent of some of the Gundam's accents. And, of course, the red band clearly labeled 'RX-78-2' was a must-have. It’s a subtle nod to its identity, making sure there’s no mistaking which legendary machine inspired this timepiece. Working on this RX-78-2 watch face taught me so much about vector graphics, layer management, and color theory in Illustrator. It was incredible to see how simple shapes and lines could come together to form such a complex illustration. If you're new to digital art or looking to create your own fan art, I highly recommend starting with something you're passionate about. Break down complex designs into simpler components, use lots of reference images, and don't be afraid to experiment with colors and textures. Even if it's an 'assignment,' pouring your personal interest into it makes the learning process so much more enjoyable and the final output truly yours.
