⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Overall the storyline and characters were decent. It wasn't as twisty as I prefer but it was still good! It felt like the ending dragged a bit.

We could have gotten to the whodunnit a bit earlier but for my first book by Katherine Alice Marshall it was pretty good. I would read another by her 🙂

... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms, let's dive a bit deeper into 'What Lies in the Woods' by Kate Alice Marshall. Like many of you, I was drawn in by that striking cover—you know, the one with the dark, red text that just screams 'mystery thriller' against a blurred autumn forest backdrop. It really sets the mood, doesn't it? The story follows Naomi Shaw, who, along with her two best friends, survived a horrific attack in the woods when they were kids. They identified the attacker, but years later, the truth starts to unravel, forcing Naomi to confront her past and the secrets they buried. This first-person narrative really puts you inside Naomi's head as she grapples with fragmented memories and suspicion. I personally love a good first-person psychological thriller because it makes you feel so connected to the protagonist's journey and her internal struggles. It's her perspective that drives the entire whodunnit, making you question everything right along with her as she tries to recall what truly happened that day. While my initial review mentioned it wasn't as 'twisty' as some might prefer, I think it's important to clarify what kind of twists we're talking about here. This isn't necessarily a book full of jump scares or sudden, out-of-the-blue revelations. Instead, the twists in 'What Lies in the Woods' are more psychological and character-driven. They slowly peel back layers of deception and memory, revealing the darkness lurking beneath. For readers who enjoy slow-burn mysteries where the tension builds through character development and uncovering secrets rather than shock value, this could be a perfect fit. I also wanted to elaborate on the ending. While it felt a bit prolonged, I can see why the author chose to extend it. It allows for a more thorough exploration of the characters' emotional aftermath and the full repercussions of their past actions. It’s not just about solving the mystery, but also about the healing and reckoning that follows. If you're someone who appreciates a comprehensive wrap-up rather than an abrupt conclusion, you might find the pace of the ending more satisfying than I initially did. Overall, 'What Lies in the Woods' is a solid read for anyone looking for a suspenseful tale with a strong focus on buried secrets and childhood trauma. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers featuring unreliable narration and atmospheric settings, and you don't mind a story where the suspense builds steadily rather than relying on constant shocking twists, then definitely give Kate Alice Marshall's work a try. I'm already looking forward to exploring more of her books!
