Month 8 of our church Bible and hymnal restoration project brought a shocking discovery. 🛠️
While unpacking the new stack of hymnals at the church office, we found mold on every single book. 😱😰🦠
Thank God we managed to find a solution. Instead of expensive chemicals, we used a time-tested, free method:
The Process:
1️⃣ Deep cleaning the covers 🛠️
2️⃣ "Sun-tanning" the books to kill spores naturally ☀️
3️⃣ Airing out the pages near the window for a week of extra UV treatment.
It’s a slow process, but for a project this size, finding a zero-cost solution that actually works is a game-changer.
The last 2 steps 🌞🌞🌞 are critical in keeping the spores from returning!
Still a few more weeks of this project before I move into my next craft: Crochet. 🧶 Follow along for the progress updates! Will we be able to complete all the books by June? 🤔
... Read moreWhen dealing with mold on delicate items like hymnals or Bibles, I found that a gentle but thorough cleaning process is key to preserving the integrity of the books while effectively removing mold spores. The natural method of sun exposure, often called "sun-tanning," is surprisingly effective because UV rays from sunlight break down mold spores and inhibit their ability to regrow. This method is not only chemical-free but also safe for most paper materials if precautions are taken, such as avoiding direct overheating or extended exposure that can cause brittleness.
In addition to sunlight, I recommend using good airflow through open windows or a well-ventilated area to help dry out moisture trapped in the pages. Mold thrives in damp environments, so maintaining dryness post-treatment is essential for long-term protection. For cleaning covers, a damp cloth dipped in a mild soap solution can remove surface mold safely; be sure to test a small region first to avoid damaging any decorative covers.
I've also experimented with indoor UV light treatment, similar to the DW 8071 (HPG) 24 BOTTLES Indoor UV therapy mentioned in related projects. This approach uses UV-C light indoors to disinfect items without sunlight, which can be useful in climates with limited sunny days. However, safety measures must be followed to protect skin and eyes from UV exposure.
This whole restoration journey taught me that patience is essential—mold removal is rarely instantaneous when avoiding harsh chemicals. Taking the time to clean, sun-dry, and air books repeatedly yields rewarding results and preserves treasured items sustainably. If you’re facing mold on your own collection, consider this zero-cost, natural approach as a safe, effective alternative to chemical treatments.
