If lending that $50 (or more) means you'll be short for rent, then it's a clear no. Don't feel guilty about prioritizing your financial well-being. Next, consider the amount and what it's for. Is it a small, manageable sum like $50 for an emergency, or a larger amount that could cause significant strain if not repaid? While the reason might be personal, understanding the urgency can sometimes help you gauge their sincerity and ability to repay. If it's for something frivolous, it might give you pause. Transparency is key from the start. If they offer to pay you back with interest, don't just nod along. Discuss the specific terms. What's the interest rate? When exactly will they pay you back? Is it a lump sum or installments? Having a clear agreement, even verbally, can prevent misunderstandings down the line. It might feel uncomfortable to talk about specifics with a friend or your fiancée, but trust me, it's far less uncomfortable than having to chase them for money later. Think about your relationship with the person. This is perhaps the most critical factor. Lending money, especially to a fiancée or a very close friend, can put a surprising amount of pressure on the relationship. Are you prepared for the possibility that the money might not be repaid on time, or even at all? And how would that impact your feelings towards them? Many people decide that for loved ones, if they can afford it, they'd rather give the money as a gift than risk damaging the relationship over a loan.
