Are runners getting too into the data?

Are runners getting too into the data?

These days, runners don't just run and finish.

We finished running, watching Pace, Heart Rate, Cadence, Stride Length, Ground Contact Time, VO2 Max....

See if the clock tells Productive or Unproductive.

Some people finished running, still not tired.

But the first feeling that happened was not, "What's the body like today?"

But is...

"Why does VO2 Max reduce?"

"Why isn't Pace relative to HR?."

"Why is HRV bad?"

"Why is the Training Status unproductive?"

"Why is 72 hours of Recovery Time not so tired today?"

These data are definitely useful!

Data helps us rehearse systematically.

Help know if we're running too hard.

Helps to see body trends

Helps plan better rehearsals.

Help not to practice as before

But the problem is....

Many people no longer use data as a "tool."

Instead, it began to provide information as a "judge of the value of rehearsals."

Good run, but the numbers aren't pretty = feel bad.

Run comfortable, but Pace slow = feel guilty.

Sleep, wake up fresh, but Sleep Score is low = start worrying.

Body Okay But Red HRV = Not Confident In Yourself

Practice has always been good, but the clock says Unproductive = Feels like myself a failure.

This is where the data starts, not the help.

But it's starting to become a voice in the head.

Some runners aren't tired of rehearsals alone.

But tired of having to interpret the numbers every day.

Both the truth is

The numbers don't know everything about us.

The clock may see Heart Rate.

But it doesn't know we were stressed about work last night.

It might see Pace.

But it doesn't know if we're running in hot, windy or slippery ground.

It might evaluate Recovery.

But it doesn't all know what we eat, how we rest, or how hard our hearts are today.

It might calculate VO2 Max.

But it doesn't mean we're better or worse off from the one-day numbers.

Information should help us understand the body more.

It doesn't make us believe our bodies at all.

The problem with this era of runners may not be the absence of information.

But is to have so much information that I forgot to ask myself

"How does it feel today?"

"Really tired?"

"Still enjoying running?"

"Does this practice help us grow up, or just make the numbers look better?"

"Are we running to develop or to appease algorithms?"

Don't be mistaken. We didn't say to stop looking at the data.

Because runners who practice seriously should have information.

But also know that information is only part of the whole picture, not all of being a runner.

Pace says speed.

Heart Rate tells the burden of the body.

Cadence tells the rhythm.

HRV may tell readiness trends

VO2 Max might give you a performance overview.

But the feeling between running, the freshness of the legs, the quality of sleep, the stress, the motivation, the consistency, and the joy left with running.

These are also important, not losing numbers.

Some days Easy Run at Pace is slower than usual; probably the best rehearsal of the day.

Some days high HR doesn't mean we're fit, but the weather can be hot, the body can be tired, or we can't rest enough.

Some days VO2 Max drops don't mean we're worse.

Some days, Training Status isn't pretty. It doesn't mean we've rehearsed our whole lives wrong.

Don't let one-day numbers ruin the confidence we've built for months.

A better runner. Not one who knows every metric.

But people who know which metric to listen to, which metric to put, and when to listen to their bodies.

The information is good, but it must be in the right place.

Let it be a map.

Not the boss.

Give it a mirror.

Not a judgment.

Let it help us rehearse smarter.

It doesn't make us more afraid of rehearsals.

In the end, the run does not just have graphs, zone lines and numbers after the event.

It still has breath

Foot rhythm

Feelings when leaving

Silence on the way.

A little pride after the end.

And the simple fact that we went out to take care of ourselves today

Don't get in with the data until you forget to get in with the run.

Because the numbers might say how fast we can run.

But our bodies and minds tell us how long we want to keep running.
