Do's and Dont's of Finances for Beginners

Do!

Do utilize a Roth 401(k). Roths are great for a number of reasons, such as investment growth and no penalties for pull out funds before a specific time period. Since the money is taxed when it is placed into the account, you can pull that money out without being taxed.

Do utilize revolving credit. This is where having ONE credit card comes to be an advantage and is often looked at by banks for loans because it shows the ability to pay back funds that were borrowed in a timely manner over an extensive period of time.

Do track your spending. This is harder to do now with automation of payments and subscriptions, especially for those who charge the "off-schedules" or don't align with your pay periods. This also includes grocery spending and pleasure spending. Being able to identify where your money is going or what can be eliminated can be helpful in hard times or when planning large purchases such as a car or house.

Do start a savings account. Shop around for a savings account with a decent or high interest percentage. Usually, 3% or better is what you are looking for. If you can get it on a monthly basis, it is great, but most offer yearly. Watch for maintenance fees, though. Savings accounts are your friend for the hard times or the big purchases.

Dont's

Don't use a Traditional 401(k). A lot of employers offer this, but they are not user-friendly. If you need to pull this money early, it will result in you paying taxes on the amount you pull out. It also is only as much as you put in, and depending on if your employer matched the amount put in.

Don't get multiple credit cards. You'll get multiple offers, but really, shop around and explore a card that fits you best. You truly only need one.

Don't spend money just because you can or have it. This is a habit I am still actively breaking. Think through your spending, is it a necessary purchase or a just because I want it purchase? Yes, you can splurge occasionally, but it needs to give you value.

Don't just have a checking account. This goes back to the savings account statement above. It's also good to have cash on hand, because that is money that can be used for fun purchases and gives physical account of your spending.

I hope this was useful and if you want to know more about other topics let me know in the comments!

... Read moreUnderstanding the fundamentals of personal finance is key to building long-term financial stability. Utilizing a Roth 401(k) offers unique advantages, such as tax-free growth and penalty-free early withdrawals on contributions, unlike traditional 401(k) plans which are less flexible and can incur taxes and penalties when withdrawn early. This makes Roth 401(k)s highly attractive for beginners prioritizing tax efficiency and liquidity. Revolving credit, managed through a single credit card, can help build a positive credit history, demonstrating reliable repayment behavior to lenders and improving chances of getting favorable loan terms. Responsible use entails paying off balances in full or maintaining a low credit utilization ratio to avoid debt accumulation. Tracking spending — including automated payments, subscriptions, groceries, and discretionary purchases — is crucial in identifying areas for savings and preventing overspending. With many payments occurring off-schedule from pay periods, diligent tracking helps maintain a clear picture of cash flow, vital for budgeting large expenses like cars or homes. Opening a savings account with competitive interest rates (typically 3% or higher) and minimal maintenance fees encourages saving for emergencies and significant purchases. Moreover, keeping some cash on hand complements checking accounts by providing physical accountability for spending. Avoiding multiple credit cards reduces complexity and risk of debt, allowing better control over credit and finances. Also, consciously distinguishing between necessary and impulsive spending fosters financial discipline, increases value from expenditures, and helps prevent wasteful habits. By integrating these do's and don'ts, beginners can establish confident money management practices that safeguard their financial health and support future goals.
