The main highlights include the Sassi di Matera, a complex of ancient cave dwellings, and the Matera Cathedral, which boasts stunning views of the town. When planning your trip, wear sturdy shoes, as exploring the rocky terrain can be a challenge with many steps and sloped streets. It's wise to make reservations for accommodations well in advance, particularly during peak tourist seasons, to avoid disappointment. Local culinary delights like orecchiette, a type of pasta, and pasticcio, a delicious local dish, are a must-try during your visit. Additionally, the Parco della Murgia Materana offers breathtaking landscapes and further insights into the area's natural beauty. While exploring the Sassi, you may find artisan shops showcasing local crafts, perfect for souvenirs. Be sure to capture the stunning vistas, and remember that Matera was also the filming location for notable movies, including "Passion of the Christ" and a James Bond film, adding to its allure as a travel destination.
