We Lived Our MasterChef Dreams For JUST $50 👩🏻‍🍳

📍 Tapa Tepi Kali, Echo Beach Canggu

📲 Booked via Cookly

🕛 12–3pm | 3-hour class

💵 ~$50 per pax

booked a 3hr class via Cookly at Tapa Tepi Kali (Canggu) and honestly?? might be one of the best things we did on the trip 🥹

this wasn’t just a cooking class!! it was a full-on Balinese kitchen takeover (minus the stress and cleanup lol)

we picked 2 menus (chicken and seafood) and here’s what we made:

chicken menu:

🌶 Base Gede – the holy grail spice paste of Balinese food. this goes in like… everything

🥗 Lawar Kacang – long bean salad with coconut + sambal. crunchy, spicy, zingy

🍲 Gerang Asem – tangy chicken soup powered by our freshly made base gede. spicy comfort in a bowl

🍢 Sate Lilit Be Siap – minced chicken satay wrapped around lemongrass sticks. YES we grilled it ourselves 🔥

🍌 Pisang Rai – banana dumplings rolled in coconut. taste wise we drl it welp… is like soggy skin on banana…

seafood menu:

🌶 Base Gede – (repeat)

🥗 Lawar Kacang – (repeat)

🍲 Soup Be Pasih – can’t get enough of Bali’s delicious seafood? we had that all in one bowl with very own seafood soup! 🦑

🐟 Pepes Be Pasih – tantalising grilled fish that we marinated AND wrapped in banana leaves. It’s THAT good 😋

🍌 Pisang Rai – (repeat)

✨ WHAT MADE IT SPECIAL:

👩‍🏫 our instructor was such a gem! shes warm, funny, super knowledgeable. she explained everything from spice pairings to cultural meanings behind the dishes

🔪 this was NOT a “watch and stir once” class!! we chopped, ground spices with a stone mortar, wrapped satay by hand, grilled stuff over open fire. it was giving MasterChef but chill

🌿 the open-air kitchen was a literal vibe! super breezy, semi-outdoor, surrounded by plants and rice field views. felt like we were cooking in a Pinterest board

👫 ANDDD there were only 2 of us in the class?? felt like a private session but without the private class $$$. vibes were IMMACULATEEE and no pressure at all~

🍽 lunch was SO satisfying (we ate everything we made!!) and we were given the recipes after so we can recreate the magic at home 🥹🫶

TLDR: if you just want to eat Balinese food, go to a warung. if you want to understand Balinese food - how it’s made, why it tastes that way, what the spices mean then take this class. 10/10 would do again 💯💯💯

Tapa Tepi Kali
2025/8/2 Edited to

... Read moreIf you're considering booking a cooking class through Cookly in Indonesia, I highly suggest choosing Tapa Tepi Kali in Canggu. The platform made the booking seamless, with clear communication and helpful details about the class. What sets this class apart is how hands-on and intimate it is — with just two attendees, we had personalized attention without the high price tag of private lessons. One memorable part was grilling fish wrapped in banana leaves right over an open flame, which tied together the sensory experience of scents, sights, and flavors unique to Balinese cuisine. This really made me feel like a MasterChef apprentice. We also enjoyed welcome drinks while waiting in a super chill environment with plants and rice field views, making the setting just as delightful as the food. Additionally, the instructor shared cultural insights and detailed spice pairings, which helped me appreciate the dishes on a deeper level rather than just the recipes. The recipes were provided afterward, so I have been able to recreate many dishes at home, bringing a slice of Bali into my kitchen. For travelers looking to understand rather than just eat Balinese food, this class offers authentic engagement and direct cooking experience. Cookly as a private chef booking platform in Indonesia offers valuable opportunities like this for personalized culinary journeys. Lastly, the free pickup service and the restaurant’s central location near Echo Beach make getting there hassle-free, perfect for incorporating into your Bali itinerary. From my experience, this class is worth every penny and more — a truly delicious way to live your MasterChef dreams on a budget.
