✨ ambience
classy, perfect spot for a date night! food is prepped right in front of you so u basically get dinner + live cooking show. also… there are actual live freshwater crabs crawling around which was lowkey fascinating but lowkey animal abuse... place is quiet too so its a really nice place for celebrating any occasions
🍣 food
sushi shin’s lineup is pretty extensive and we tried stuff we’d never had before like white salmon and anago (saltwater eel). we only got the tsuki menu instead of the hoshi menu so we saw other tables getting other stuff like monkfish liver and ngl… had slight FOMO…
BUT important psa: almost EVERYTHING is aburi-ed. they clearly go heavy on fattier fish/ cuts so blowtorching is kinda necessary to cut through the oiliness. if you’re not into that, it can get a bit jelak halfway tru. thankfully they give pickled young ginger in between dishes and WOW that thing was refreshing and weirdly addictive although some might be abit spicy
🙋♂️ service
service was solid. chef explained each dish clearly and even gave tips on how to eat them properly. he also noticed some people getting full and asked if they wanted less rice which i thought was very thoughtful. ginger running low? topped up. green tea empty? refilled immediately. very attentive!!
full menu below:
🥢appetiser: cold tofu w/ ikura & caviar,

🍥hot dishes: chawanmushi with tobiko and foie gras, asari miso soup
🍡dessert: yuzu sorbet and matcha mochi w/ azuki filling
If you are considering visiting Sushi Shin in Johor Bahru for their omakase experience, here are some additional tips from my visit that might help you get the most out of it. Firstly, booking your table well in advance is key, as the place fills up quickly and they require reservations roughly one month ahead. They even send a friendly reminder via WhatsApp a day before your booking, which is really helpful. The ambience definitely sets the tone – it's classy and quiet, making it an excellent choice for date nights or special celebrations. Watching the chef prepare dishes right in front of you adds a unique element that makes the meal feel like a performance. Something to note: the heavy use of aburi (flame-searing) on fattier fish is a signature style at Sushi Shin, which adds a smoky aroma and cuts through richness. However, if you’re not a fan of that, it might get overwhelming midway through. The pickled young ginger they serve is a refreshing palate cleanser that's deliciously addictive, and they kindly top it up throughout the meal. The service is attentive and thoughtful, with the chef providing clear explanations of each course and even adjusting portions on the fly if diners seem full – a personal touch that made the experience more comfortable. For those curious about the full menu, Sushi Shin offers a variety of seafood rarely seen elsewhere like white salmon and anago (saltwater eel). They also offer different menus beyond the Tsuki option, which includes delicacies like monkfish liver for those who want to explore further. Lastly, the price is reasonable considering the quality and presentation, roughly RM268 (~$102 SGD) per person after taxes. For omakase lovers in JB or travelers looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience, Sushi Shin’s lunch omakase is a fantastic choice that I highly recommend.
