SUWON - Food recommends! (CHEAP and famous!)

📍Suwon-si

1. Dessert - MOCHI-GO

❗️Layered between 2 pieces of mochi, will be a thick batter of either Matcha chocolate, Milk, Red bean, or custard. Long queues so expect a 20 minute wait! We were very lucky as we were the last few orders at about 530pm before they closed for a short break. If we had missed it, we would have to wait for another 1-2hrs as after dinner, we walked past and saw the staff had resumed taking orders and locals were starting to form a crowd around to wait.

2. Lunch / Dinner - KIMCHI STEW

❗️ this was a famous store we chanced upon that was full of locals (even young couples who wanted to have dinner before going on their date). Each serving was only KRW10k with a multitude of banchan (side dishes) - we were in heaven the minute the food touched our tongues 😭

3. ROSE TTEOKBOKKI

❗️Highly recommended- base was so creamy and spicy. Only KRW20k!

4. OCTOPUS GRILL

❗️This was amazing! We loved it. After finishing the grilled octopus, we ordered a bowl of rice and fresh fish roe to be added into the grill to make rice balls. They were absolutely delicious 🤤

5. SUWON market

❗️Head down for really affordable seaweed snacks, banchan dishes, hotteok, bunggeopang in the early morning!

The Suwon traditional markets, especially Hwaseo Market, are treasure troves where you can find freshly prepared hotteok (sweet syrup-filled pancakes) and bunggeopang (fish-shaped pastries). These are perfect to grab as quick snacks while wandering around. For a more immersive experience, try visiting Suwon in the morning to catch the market at its liveliest. Many vendors offer seaweed snacks and a variety of banchan that make excellent affordable souvenirs or additions to your meals. If you’re into Korean BBQ, Suwon has numerous local spots where you can enjoy grilled meats paired with traditional sides. These places tend to be popular with residents and provide a warm, authentic atmosphere. Also, don't hesitate to ask locals about their favorite hidden gems; some of the best dishes aren't always listed in travel guides. Finally, if you crave a fusion twist, the rose tteokbokki stands out as a creative take on classic spicy rice cakes with its creamy yet spicy sauce. Pair it with a local drink or grilled octopus for a full Suwon culinary adventure. Don’t forget to check opening times and be ready to wait during peak hours—these affordable and famous foods are worth every minute of the queue!
