the convenience store by the sea 🌊

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sonoko Machida’s The Convenience Store by the Sea was such a warm and heartfelt read. The story revolves around a small convenience store called Tenderness in a seaside town of Mojiko and the lives of the different people connected to it.

Each chapter revolves around a particular character who brings their own struggles and emotions into the story. Somehow, the convenience store ends up feeling like a safe space not just for the characters but for me too.

This book kinda forces you to slow down and just be in the moment for a while. It’s something that I think many of us struggle with in the hustle and bustle of life. I also particularly love all the food that the characters consumed from the konbini, taking notes so I can try when I visit Japan 🤩

... Read moreReading The Convenience Store by the Sea truly made me appreciate the simple yet profound impact a neighborhood store can have on a community. The convenience store, Tenderness, isn’t just a place to buy snacks; it becomes a sanctuary where characters confront their loneliness, worries, and hopes. This reminded me of my own experiences with local shops that have always served as comforting spots during stressful times. What stood out the most to me was how the author, Sonoko Machida, uses the konbini food—not just as background elements—but as cultural and emotional symbols. Each snack or meal mentioned is tied deeply to the characters’ memories and current emotions, which adds a vivid sensory layer to the story. It inspired me to explore Japanese convenience store cuisine myself, imagining the quiet pleasure of small but meaningful bites while reflecting on life. The novel’s pacing encourages readers to pause and appreciate moments they might usually rush through. In today’s fast-paced world, this approach felt refreshing and grounding. It reminded me of the importance of mindfulness, of breathing deeply and tuning into our surroundings, even in the most ordinary places. Additionally, the seaside setting of Mojiko enhances this feeling of calm and connection. The ocean’s presence brings a timeless quality to the narrative, symbolizing both change and continuity, which resonates well with the book’s themes of healing and human connection. Overall, The Convenience Store by the Sea offers more than a story; it offers a heartfelt reminder to slow down and embrace the small places and moments that bring us comfort and community. It’s a beautiful blend of storytelling and cultural insight, perfect for anyone looking to find warmth and reflection in their reading.

Recently visited Namhae and the surrounding areas for the first time and we really loved it - gave us very relaxed small town vibes (if you’ve enjoyed Cinque Terre in Italy or Taitung in Taiwan, you’ll probably enjoy Namhae too) But that said - Namhae also isn’t for everyone - here’s what you s

Been using this daily contact lenses for 2 YEARS!
No need to go JB for affordable contact lense, the store is in Somerset 🤯 I used to be a colored lens girly, the kind who stretched one pair for months at a time. Then I came across an article that explained how damaging that actually is for your eyes and how crucial proper eye health really is.

Hello ✨ I just came back from my Korea trip with my bf and fam. This was my second time visiting Jeju and third time to Seoul, but was my bf’s first time in Korea. So here’s how our 3-day trip went — well actually 4 days, but since we arrived in Jeju at night, I didn’t consider the first day.
