Heart Bones ~ Honest Book Review!

Book Name: Heart Bones 💔 🦴

Author: Colleen Hoover

Genre: Romance

I am not sure how I found this book but I thought it was going to be more of a mystery than a romance - so I was genuinely surprised that it kept my attention.

SN: This is my first romance novel I read!

It was a quick read so that helped tremendously (it’s not due back to the library for another 2 weeks - I usually keep books beyond the time allotted 🤫).

I probably finished it so quickly because I have been reading a lot of self help books the beginning of the year and was craving a fiction read.

👍Pros: Quick read and easily digestible. This book reminded me of what the summer romance could have looked like between the two main characters in the movie Grease if it was modern day.

I enjoyed seeing the growth of both of the primary characters and looked forward to when the various secrets would drop - I think the secrets that were yet to be revealed, and the questions I had, kept me engaged the most - not so much the romance.

It wasn’t to “romancy” I was expecting a lot more romance since this was classified as a romance novel.

🤔Cons: This is really nitpicky but I thought the pages were cheap.. idk lol that was my first impression of the actual physical book - there reminded me of computer paper. I knew there was going to be a plot twist because that’s what drew me to wanting to read the book, but the plot twist was sort of weak to me. Don’t get me wrong.. it was surprising, but nothing out of this world. I’m sure if you are accustomed to the world of romance novels you could have seen it coming.

💭 This is a great introductory level romance novel for anyone interested in getting their feet wet into the genre ♥️

... Read moreOkay, so let's dive a little deeper into 'Heart Bones' by Colleen Hoover, because I know many of you are curious about what's really inside beyond just the basic review. When I first picked up the paperback, that striking book cover with its unique skull outlines and colorful floral designs truly intrigued me. It almost hinted at something darker or more mysterious, which, honestly, fit my initial expectations before realizing it was firmly in the romance genre! Speaking of genre, a lot of you might be wondering, 'Is Heart Bones spicy?' Well, from my perspective, and as someone who doesn't typically read romance, I found it wasn't overly explicit or 'romancy' in the way some contemporary romance novels can be. It definitely has its moments of tension and emotional intimacy, but if you're looking for something that delves into steamy scenes chapter after chapter, this might not be your pick. It felt more like a slow burn, focusing heavily on the emotional connection and the characters' backstories rather than just the physical aspect. This makes it, in my opinion, quite accessible and a great entry point for anyone new to the romance genre, which addresses the 'age rating' query implicitly – it feels more mature in its themes of trauma and resilience than explicitly adult in its romantic encounters. For those asking about a 'summary' without spoilers, imagine two young people from vastly different worlds, brought together by circumstance in a small, isolated setting. There’s a palpable sense of longing, secrets, and a past that constantly threatens their present. The story masterfully weaves in elements of vulnerability and resilience, truly embracing the idea of 'Beating the Odds' as mentioned in the review tags. The characters, particularly the protagonist, Baylor, are incredibly relatable in their struggles and growth. And that 'subtle plot twist'? Without giving anything away, it’s not the kind that will leave your jaw on the floor for days, but it definitely adds a layer of depth and consequence to the characters' actions and motivations. It felt more like a natural, yet surprising, revelation that cemented the emotional stakes. It truly made me reflect on how past events shape us. The pacing is fantastic for a quick read, making it easy to finish in a weekend. If you're like me, juggling many things, you'll appreciate how digestible it is. So, if you're curious about Colleen Hoover but are a bit hesitant about intense romance, or if you just want a moving story about overcoming challenges with a touch of summer love, Heart Bones is definitely worth checking out. The visual of the book cover alone tells a story of contrasts, perfectly mirroring the journey within its pages. It's truly a novel that stays with you long after the final page.
