Review for Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover

There was nothing in particular that was wrong with this book. But I have to be honest, while I was reading it I couldn't quite believe this is something Colleen Hoover wrote. At one point I checked the cover just to make sure her name was actually on it. I know her last few books have sort of detoured from the usual romantic genre she has written in. And while this one had some romance, it fell a little flat for me.

The rest of this review (sort of) contains spoilers, so read with caution.

Basically, the plot of the book was:

Beyah is a sad person.

Beyah meets Samson, who is sad person.

We know why Beyah is sad, but we don't really know why Samson is sad (I mean if you squint your eyes and really try, you can probably guess why).

Beyah and Samson are sad together and like to make out while being sad.

Predictable plot twist occurs.

"My mom died, lol" - Beyah to her dad.

Vague, then sort of cute ending.

The end.

So while this didn't really live up to my expectations,

- no memorable characters, no distinctive humorous scenes, really no tension at all - it was still a pretty decent read. Definitely not up there with my favorites

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard about Colleen Hoover's 'Heart Bones,' and maybe you're wondering what it's all about, especially after reading my initial thoughts. As someone who's read quite a few of CoHo's books, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what makes 'Heart Bones' tick, covering some of the aspects I know many of you search for – like the characters, a proper summary, and what to expect from the ending. First off, let's talk about the Heart Bones characters. At its core, we have Beyah Grim, a young woman who's had a really tough life, growing up in poverty with a neglectful mother. She's fiercely independent and guarded. Then there's Samson, a seemingly privileged guy from a wealthy family, but he carries his own heavy burdens and secrets. Their paths cross during a summer in Texas, and it's their shared sense of loneliness and sadness that initially draws them together. What makes them compelling, despite my earlier skepticism, is the quiet intensity of their connection and how they slowly peel back layers of their pasts to find solace in each other. For those looking for a Heart Bones summary without giving away every single beat, here's the gist: Beyah is forced to move in with her estranged father and his new family for the summer after a tragic event. She expects a quiet, transient existence before heading off to college. Instead, she meets Samson, her wealthy neighbor. Their relationship isn't a whirlwind romance; it's a slow burn built on mutual understanding, unspoken pain, and a unique 'summer only' arrangement. They both harbor significant secrets, and a big part of the book is about these secrets gradually coming to light and how they impact their fragile bond. It's a story steeped in themes of grief, socioeconomic disparity, first love, and the pursuit of healing. Now, about the Heart Bones ending – without giving away the final twist, I can say that it aims for a bittersweet, hopeful resolution. Like many of Colleen Hoover's books, there's often a significant reveal or challenge that the characters must overcome. In 'Heart Bones,' the ending ties up the loose ends surrounding Samson's mysterious past and Beyah's future, leaving readers with a sense of closure while still acknowledging the complexities of their journey. It's an ending that tries to offer a glimmer of light after a somewhat darker, more emotionally charged narrative. And for those curious about the Heart Bones book cover, it typically features a simple yet evocative design, often with minimalistic elements or symbolic imagery that hints at the story's emotional depth. It definitely sets a certain mood even before you dive in. Reflecting on my overall 'reading experience' with 'Heart Bones,' if I were to rate it on a scale of 1 to 5, it probably landed around a 3.2 for me – a solid, if not groundbreaking, read. While it might not be my absolute favorite CoHo, it definitely offers a unique reading journey for those who appreciate stories about overcoming adversity and finding unexpected connections. It's a reminder that sometimes, even when things feel a little off the usual path, there's still value in the journey.
