Lazy Foodie in Shanghai: How to Eat Crab?

It’s my Nth time in Shanghai, but unfortunately, it’s not crab season. So instead, I headed to Yuxingji on West Nanjing Road, a highly rated spot, to try their popular Crab Roe Noodles.

They have a set menu available on Dianping for ¥138, which feels fairly reasonable. If you participate in their “save + check-in” promo, you also get a free dessert, which makes me wonder if the hype is partially marketing-driven 😅.

Still, the crab roe noodle set does feel ritualistic in its presentation:

🍜 The set includes some small appetizers, a soup, a plate of crab roe topping, and a large bowl of plain noodles.

✅ Appetizers include cherry tomatoes, black fungus, and crunchy pickled radish — simple but refreshing.

✅ The crab roe topping comes in a shallow dish that looks generous at first glance, but once you pour it over the noodles, you’ll wish there was more.

✅ The noodles sit in the bowl like they just came out of a spa, waiting for their “crab roe moisturizer.”

Here’s how I recommend enjoying the meal in four steps:

Step 1️⃣: Crab Roe in Its Purest Form

Pour the crab roe over the noodles and gently stir. The richness of the crab oil instantly transforms the plain noodles. The roe brings the umami, and the noodles bring the comfort — the perfect tag team. Even as someone who usually avoids carbs, I couldn’t stop slurping.

Step 2️⃣: Add Vinegar for Extra Kick

If it starts to feel a bit mild, try what I did — add a splash of vinegar and a touch of chili midway through. The server actually recommended this: the sour and spicy contrast deepens the flavor and wakes up your taste buds.

Step 3️⃣: Cleanse with Soup

Between bites, sip the soup to balance out the richness. Despite the oil droplets floating on top, it’s light and clean, with mushrooms and goji berries — no meat, just mellow flavors to reset your palate.

Step 4️⃣: End on a Sweet Note

Don’t forget the Su-style dessert you get from the check-in deal — called Four-Color Cake (四色糕), it’s basically a layered glutinous rice cake. Visually charming with bright layers, it’s soft, sticky, and lightly sweet.

Honestly, I think every visitor to Shanghai should try a bowl of crab roe noodles. Hairy crab can be expensive and messy, but this dish offers all the flavor in a more affordable, mess-free format. A must for lazy crab lovers!

And finally, a balanced flavor profile – rich but not overly greasy, with that distinct umami hit. Don't be shy to explore smaller, local eateries too; sometimes the best discoveries are off the main tourist paths! You might hear a lot about 'hairy crab season' in autumn. While fresh hairy crab is undoubtedly a delicacy, don't despair if you're visiting at another time! Crab roe noodle dishes are often available year-round because the roe and meat can be preserved. This means you can enjoy that luxurious crab flavor anytime.
