What’s So Special About Guiyang’s Sticky Rice?
Sticky rice used to be the kind of breakfast you’d casually grab on the way to school.
All across Guiyang, you’ll find small street carts selling it:
a big pot of sticky rice in the middle, surrounded by little bowls of toppings and seasonings.
Growing up, honestly, most sticky rice stalls tasted pretty similar to me.
Until one day, I suddenly noticed that “Liuguangmen Aunt Mao’s Sticky Rice” had gone viral online.
That made me curious too:
👉 What exactly makes this place so special?
⸻
⏰ I arrived around 9 AM.
There were about five or six people in line, but the queue moved very quickly.
⸻
📖 The Menu: Simple… but Full of “Code Words”
The menu isn’t complicated, but the naming can be confusing at first:
* “4+1 Standard”
* “5+2 Classic”
* “8+2 Family Combo”
What do those numbers mean?
Actually:
* the first number = amount of sticky rice
* the second number = amount of crispy pork bits (cuishao)
If you just want a quick taste like I did,
the basic ¥5 version is more than enough.
⸻
🌶️ The Toppings
There are six toppings available:
* sugar
* chili oil
* scallions
* pickled radish
* crispy pork bits
* fried peanuts
If you’re trying to avoid extra calories, you can skip the sugar like I did.
But honestly—
when I think back to childhood sticky rice,
what I remember most is that combination of sweet + spicy.
Without the sugar,
it somehow no longer tastes like childhood.
And one more thing:
🥵 their chili oil is actually pretty spicy.
If you don’t handle spice well,
you might end up like me—
eating while quietly tearing up. 😭
⸻
The sticky rice itself is soft and chewy,
and the toppings add layers of texture and flavor.
But to be honest…
Does Aunt Mao’s version really taste that different from every other sticky rice stall in Guiyang?
I’m not so sure.
I honestly feel like if you held a blind tasting competition,
most people probably couldn’t tell them apart.
So in my opinion,
coming here is less about discovering some life-changing flavor,
and more about:
👉 joining the hype,
👉 experiencing a local food icon,
👉 and having fun with the atmosphere.
⸻
One small complaint though:
The ¥5 portion is definitely tiny.
You get just enough to understand the flavor…
and then suddenly it’s gone before you’re full.
But maybe that’s actually a good thing—
because it leaves room for the next Guiyang food stop.
