... Read moreHaving lived in the U.S. as an Italian, I found the American work culture fascinating yet challenging in many ways. Jobs like working at Hooters or Olive Garden seemed like interesting experiences not only for the work itself but for the cultural immersion they offered. For example, Hooters is often stereotyped, but it also felt like a community with a fun atmosphere, despite the challenges of fitting in with height requirements and accents, which I struggled with. Corporate America was another big dream for me, especially after earning an accounting degree. However, the reality was quite different from the TV show "The Office." The day-to-day work felt monotonous and uninspiring, leading to a realization that my passion did not lie in accounting, despite the practical advantages of the career. This disconnect is common among immigrants who sometimes pursue certain fields due to expectations or education systems back home, which do not always align with their true interests. Volunteering as an EMT was a truly eye-opening experience. It taught me a lot about responsibility, decision-making, and focus under pressure. Still, I found that my stress response and difficulty in concentrating made it hard for me to thrive in such a demanding role. This personal insight helped me understand the importance of finding a job that matches not only skills but also temperament. Working at Olive Garden was a blend of love and hate. On one hand, it was a chance to connect with familiar Italian flavors and culture; on the other, it was a reminder that it’s not the authentic Italy many imagine. This duality highlighted my cultural identity struggles, balancing heritage with my new surroundings. In sum, navigating American jobs as an Italian involved a mix of dreams, cultural clashes, and self-discovery. It showed me the importance of embracing one’s unique background while adapting to new environments. For anyone facing similar culture shocks, I recommend exploring various roles, staying true to your interests, and understanding that every experience offers valuable lessons, even if it’s not the perfect job.
