The Hard Truths of a Pediatric Dental Resident

Successfully completing residency is essential to becoming a pediatric dentist, and though no program is perfect, I gained invaluable experience throughout the years. Still, there are some things I wish I had known before entering:

Pros:

* Working with like-minded individuals every day was an incredible privilege.

* Exposure to a diverse patient population helped me learn how to manage medically and dentally complex cases.

* Collaborating with different providers taught me various approaches to behavior management.

Cons:

* Pay/tuition can be challenging. Some programs charge tuition and offer limited or no stipends, making it difficult to maintain a livable lifestyle.

* Dental residents often don’t receive the same benefits as medical residents, missing out on perks like meal/housing stipends, IVF access, and more.

* Many programs are short-staffed, meaning residents handle administrative tasks, patient follow-ups, and x-rays, with assistants only available for specific procedures.

2024/9/22 Edited to

... Read morePediatric dental residency can be both rewarding and challenging. Many residents often face the reality that not every patient interaction will be seamless. Understanding that you may not get along with every family is crucial. Also, managing time efficiently is essential; sometimes there won't be enough hours to address every aspect of a patient's dental health. Residents may often feel overwhelmed by the complexities of treatment and may not be able to attend to all patients perfectly, but doing your best is what matters. Additionally, navigating the financial landscape can be tough, as tuition costs paired with insufficient stipends put pressure on residents. Overall, while the path may have its hurdles, the opportunity to make a positive impact on children's health is immeasurable and worth each effort.
