... Read moreIt's a phrase we hear often: 'people make time for what's important to them.' And while that's true, actually doing it, especially when life gets hectic, feels like a monumental task. I know I’ve struggled with it, feeling like I was constantly pouring from an empty cup, convinced that my needs had to come last. As a mom, the guilt of taking even an hour for myself was immense. But what I've learned, often the hard way, is that prioritizing your own well-being isn't selfish; it's essential. It's the foundation for being present, patient, and truly effective in all other areas of your life.
This past February, I decided enough was enough. I committed to an 'INNERGROWTH RESET,' really focusing on carving out moments just for me. It wasn't about grand gestures, but small, consistent acts of self-care. I realized that if I didn't consciously schedule these times, they simply wouldn't happen. Life has a way of filling every empty slot!
One of the biggest takeaways from my reset was realizing that self-care isn't just bubble baths (though those are lovely!). It's about intentionally choosing what's best for you. The image I kept reminding myself of listed some fantastic tips, and I want to dive a little deeper into how I've integrated them into my routine.
1. Do what you love: This sounds simple, but when was the last time you truly indulged in a hobby or activity that lights you up? For me, it was dusting off my old sketchpad. Even 15 minutes a day made a huge difference. What's your "thing"? Reading, gardening, listening to music, a quick walk? Make time for it.
2. Treat yourself well: This extends beyond material treats. It's about how you speak to yourself, the food you nourish your body with, and ensuring you get enough rest. I started making sure I had a proper, sit-down breakfast, rather than just grabbing something on the go. It feels small, but it's a powerful act of self-respect.
3. Choose what's best for you: This is about setting boundaries. Sometimes, saying 'no' to an extra commitment, even if it feels like you 'should' do it, is the most profound act of self-care. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but protecting your energy is crucial.
4. Recharge your mind: Our minds are constantly bombarded. I found that meditation apps, even for 5 minutes, or simply sitting in silence with a cup of tea, helped calm the noise. Journaling is another powerful tool to process thoughts and emotions.
5. Connect with nature: Even just stepping outside for a few minutes can be incredibly grounding. A quick walk around the block, noticing the trees or the sky, can shift your perspective and reduce stress.
6. Reflect and grow: Take time to review what's working and what's not. What makes you feel good? What drains you? This reflection helps you adjust your self-care plan to truly support your inner growth.
Making time for these things initially felt like I was 'stealing' time from others, but the reality is, I became a better version of myself. I had more patience, more energy, and a clearer mind. My kids benefited from a happier, more present mom, and I felt a renewed sense of purpose. It truly is okay to put yourself first. You are worth the investment, and everyone around you will benefit from the overflow of your well-being. So, what small step will you take today to make time for what's truly important – YOU?
