Privilege over freedom?

Have you ever held back from doing something you truly wanted to, just because you were afraid of being perceived as 'cringe'? I know I have. That feeling of dread, wondering what others might think, can be paralyzing. Lately, I’ve been reflecting on a powerful idea: if we claim to love freedom, but only when it applies to us or to people who fit into our comfort zones, are we truly loving freedom, or are we actually cherishing a form of privilege? This thought really resonated with me. When we judge others for their unconventional hobbies, their unique style, or their unapologetic enthusiasm, we might inadvertently be protecting a subtle form of inequality. We're reinforcing a social hierarchy where certain expressions are 'acceptable' and others are 'cringe,' thereby limiting everyone's genuine freedom. Think about it: true freedom should mean the liberty to express ourselves authentically, without the constant threat of harsh judgment or social exclusion. If I'm afraid to share my niche interest because "they gonna judge anyway," then my freedom of expression is curtailed. And if I, in turn, judge someone else for their 'cringey' behavior, I'm contributing to that same system of limited freedom. It's a cycle that often goes unnoticed. Embracing the idea that it's okay to "be cringe" is actually a radical act of self-acceptance and a step towards advocating for universal freedom. It means letting go of the need for external validation and understanding that judgment often comes from a place of insecurity in others, or from deeply ingrained societal expectations that benefit a privileged few who fit the mold. So, how do we start? For me, it began with small acts. Wearing that outfit I loved but thought was 'too much,' sharing a quirky hobby, or simply speaking my mind without overthinking. It's about recognizing that what one person deems 'cringe' is another's authentic joy. By allowing ourselves to be authentically 'cringe,' we not only liberate ourselves but also subtly challenge the norms that perpetuate inequality in expression. We open up space for others to do the same, fostering a community where freedom truly applies to everyone, not just those with the privilege of fitting in. Let's choose to celebrate individuality and genuine expression, making "be cringe they gonna judge anyway" a mantra of liberation, not fear.
