亚洲钳嘴鹳（幼鸟），也叫钳嘴鹳，学名 Anastomus oscitans。
厚重宽大的角质长嘴是它最核心特征，成鸟上下喙闭合会留有缝隙，专门用来夹碎福寿螺、淡水螺壳。
多见于湖泊、水田、沼泽湿地，东南亚、新加坡、在中国云南广西都有分布，主食各类水生螺类。
Visiting the Singapore Botanic Gardens for birdwatching can be an incredibly rewarding experience, especially when you get to observe species like the Asian Openbill Stork. This bird is fascinating due to its specialized long, thick, and keratinous bill, which unlike many other birds, has a gap when the upper and lower mandibles close. This unique anatomy helps it efficiently grasp and crush aquatic snails such as the golden apple snail and other freshwater snail shells, which form the bulk of its diet. From my experience, the best time to spot the Asian Openbill Stork is during early mornings or late afternoons when they forage around lake edges, rice paddies, and marshy wetlands within and around the Botanic Gardens. Singapore’s tropical climate with abundant wetlands provides an ideal habitat for this bird and many other avian species. Moreover, this species isn't limited to Singapore; it can be found broadly across Southeast Asia, including parts of Yunnan and Guangxi in China. Observing their behavior up close offers insight into the ecological importance of wetlands for maintaining biodiversity, especially for water-dependent species like these storks. When birdwatching here, I recommend bringing binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens to capture their distinctive bill and feeding habits without disturbing them. If you’re passionate about photography or simply looking for a tranquil escape from urban life, the Botanic Gardens is a perfect spot that offers glimpses into Southeast Asia’s rich avifauna. Overall, my time observing the Asian Openbill Stork has deepened my appreciation for these unique birds and the vital wetland ecosystems they inhabit. It’s a wonderful experience worth sharing with anyone interested in nature and birdwatching.
