Symptoms of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

https://youtu.be/6Qs-TqzlAIw?si=4g71l5NnR6FoPsrh

Wondering what the early signs of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) look like? In this video, we walk through the most common symptoms—from delayed walking to muscle weakness and enlarged calves—so you know what to look for and when to seek support.

As parents of two boys living with Duchenne, we're passionate about educating other families and helping them feel informed and empowered. Whether you're navigating a new diagnosis or just learning about DMD, we’re here to share what we’ve learned on our journey.

... Read moreNavigating a new diagnosis or even just suspecting Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) can be overwhelming. As a family who has walked this path, we understand the importance of recognizing the early signs. It's often the small, subtle cues in a child's development that can point towards DMD, and being informed can make a significant difference in seeking timely support and interventions. From our experience, one of the first signs many parents notice is delayed motor development. While every child develops at their own pace, consistent delays in milestones like sitting, crawling, or especially walking, can be a red flag. For children with DMD, walking might be delayed beyond 18 months, and even when they do start walking, they might have an unsteady, waddling gait. They often struggle with running or jumping, finding these activities much harder than their peers. Frequent falls are another common early indicator, as muscle weakness affects their balance and coordination. Another distinctive early sign is what's known as Gower's maneuver. This is a characteristic way a child with DMD stands up from a sitting or lying position. Instead of simply standing up, they use their hands to 'walk' up their legs to push themselves upright, due to weakness in their hip and thigh muscles. We also observed enlarged calves, a condition called pseudo-hypertrophy, which isn't due to muscle strength but rather the replacement of muscle tissue with fat and connective tissue. These muscles might feel firm, but they are actually weaker than they appear. How Symptoms Progress is crucial to understand. Initially, the weakness primarily affects the proximal muscles – those closer to the body's core, like the hips, thighs, and shoulders. Over time, this weakness progresses to affect distal muscles in the arms and legs. This gradual loss of muscle function has a profound impact life for a child living with DMD. Daily activities that most children take for granted, such as climbing stairs, getting up from the floor, or lifting objects, become increasingly challenging. As the condition advances, it can affect the heart and respiratory muscles, making regular monitoring and management by a multidisciplinary medical team essential. Recognizing these early signs and understanding how the disease progresses allowed us to advocate for our children and explore available treatments and support. If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, seeking a medical evaluation is the most important step.
