Beginner Photography Must-Haves (Gear Edition)

Just starting out in photography? I know it’s exciting to go for the most professional gear, but what if I told you don’t need any of that!

Especially at the beginning when you’re just learning composition basics, you don’t need much. A beginner camera or even your phone works! I love a 50mm lens as a good starting out lens. Keep it simple practice often, and only upgrade when you outgrow your basics!

... Read moreStarting out in photography can feel overwhelming with so many gear options available, but it’s important to focus on essentials that truly help you learn and grow your skills. Your phone camera is a surprising yet powerful tool for beginners, allowing you to practice composition, lighting, and framing without any upfront cost. If you want to invest a little more, an entry-level DSLR paired with a 50mm prime lens is highly recommended. This lens is versatile, great for learning the fundamentals of aperture and depth of field, and helps you get sharp images with beautiful background blur. Editing your photos is equally important to bring your vision to life. Free apps like Lightroom Mobile, Snapseed, and VSCO offer robust editing tools that are perfect for beginners without the need to buy expensive software. These tools allow you to adjust exposure, contrast, colors, and more, helping you understand how editing can enhance your photography. Avoid spending on costly flashes, multiple lenses, studio lights, or high-end camera bodies at the start. These advanced accessories are not necessary until you have mastered the basics and know what styles or genres of photography you want to pursue. Instead, practice regularly with simple gear to build a strong foundation. As you improve, you can gradually upgrade your equipment based on your specific needs and goals. Remember, photography is about creativity and observation more than gear. Focus on understanding light, composition, and storytelling through your camera. With the right mindset and basic gear, anyone can capture stunning photos and enjoy the learning journey.
