Why I Annotate My Books

Annotating used to feel intimidating to me — like it had to be academic or “done right.”

But now, it’s one of my favorite ways to slow down and actually connect with what I’m reading.

I annotate to:

notice themes and patterns

capture thoughts before they disappear

make reading feel more intentional (and more fun)

You don’t need fancy supplies or strict rules — just curiosity and permission to interact with the book.

I wrote more about why I annotate and shared the exact tools I use in a blog post 🤍

📎 Link is in my bio if you want to read it.

... Read moreI used to think annotating my books meant I had to be a literary scholar, perfectly dissecting every line. But honestly, it's become one of my favorite ways to truly immerse myself in a story and make my reading experience so much richer. It's not about being 'right'; it's about making the book your own. For me, annotating isn't just about understanding the text; it's also about creating a beautiful, personal record of my journey through the book. Seeing those handwritten annotations, circled text, and colorful sticky notes peeking out from the pages makes me feel more connected to the story long after I've finished reading. If you're looking for an aesthetic book annotation guide that's also practical, here are some simple tips I've picked up. Making Your Annotations Aesthetic & Functional: Achieving that annotated book pages aesthetic doesn't require artistic talent, just a little intention. I love using different colored pens and highlighters. For example, I might use blue for quotes that resonate with me, green for world-building details, and pink for character development. This color-coding isn't just pretty; it helps me quickly find specific types of information later. Neat handwriting, even if it's just small notes in the margins, also contributes to a pleasing look. Don't be afraid to experiment with different pen types—fine-liners or gel pens can make your book notes aesthetic and easy to read. A Simple Annotation Guide for Deeper Reading: Underlining/Highlighting: This is my go-to for powerful sentences, forgotten vocabulary, or key plot points. It's a quick way to flag important information. Margin Notes: These are where my thoughts truly live! I jot down questions, make predictions, connect ideas to other books or real-life experiences, or even express simple reactions like "OMG!" or "Nope!" This is how I "capture thoughts before they disappear." Sticky Notes: My absolute best friend for annotating books! I use small, clear sticky notes when I don't want to write directly on the page, or larger ones for more extensive thoughts, character analysis, or even summarizing a chapter. They're perfect for marking important annotated book pages without permanence, and they add a lovely layered look. You can also use page tabs to mark favorite sections or recurring themes. Symbols: Develop your own shorthand! A star might mean a favorite quote, a question mark for something confusing, or an exclamation point for a shocking revelation. This is a truly personal touch. Tools I Love for Annotating: You really don't need much to start, but a few simple tools can make a big difference: Pens: Fine-tip gel pens (they don't bleed as much) or felt-tip pens in various colors. Highlighters: Pastel highlighters are great for a softer, less distracting look than neon ones. Sticky Notes & Tabs: Clear sticky notes are fantastic, and colorful tabs help organize different sections or themes. Special Annotation Approaches: How to Annotate Poems: When reading poetry, I focus on imagery, metaphors, rhythm, and word choice. I'll underline evocative lines, note down possible interpretations of symbols, and pay attention to how the poem makes me feel. Don't forget to mark line breaks and stanza structure. Annotating Thrillers Socially: For thrillers, I'm all about tracking clues, red herrings, and forming theories! I'll note down character motives, suspicious actions, and plot twists. If discussing with friends, I might use a specific color or symbol to mark points I want to bring up in our book club or online discussion, making it easy to review for a "social" sharing. Ultimately, there are no strict rules. The most important thing is that annotating enhances your reading experience. It's a wonderful way to slow down, engage deeply with the words, and make each book uniquely yours. So grab a pen, some sticky notes, and start exploring!
