Nightmare Before Christmas Room & Coffin

... Read moreHey fellow Halloween and Nightmare Before Christmas fanatics! If you're anything like me, you live for spooky season all year round, and there's nothing quite like bringing the magic of Halloween Town into your own space. I recently dove headfirst into creating my very own Nightmare Before Christmas themed room, and let me tell you, it was a blast! The centerpiece? A DIY coffin, of course. When I started this project, I wanted to capture that whimsical yet eerie vibe of the movie. First things first, think about your color palette. Black, white, purple, and hints of orange or deep red are perfect. I found that painting one accent wall a deep, spooky purple really set the mood. For lighting, fairy lights with a slightly yellow or purple tint can create a fantastic glow, especially draped around windows or shelves. Now, for the star of the show: the DIY coffin! Don't be intimidated; it's more achievable than you might think. I decided to make mine out of sturdy cardboard boxes I collected (think appliance boxes or moving boxes). You'll need a utility knife, a ruler, hot glue, and plenty of black paint. I sketched out the classic coffin shape on my cardboard – wider at the top, tapering slightly, and then squared off at the bottom. Cut out two identical pieces for the front and back, and then strips for the sides. Hot glue is your best friend here for quick assembly. Once the basic structure was together, I reinforced the inside seams with more cardboard strips. Painting was the fun part! I used matte black acrylic paint, giving it a few coats for a solid, opaque finish. To add that extra touch, I thought about Jack Skellington's pinstripes. Instead of painting them on, I used white electrical tape – it was surprisingly effective and gave a clean, crisp line. You could also stencil on some iconic TBC motifs like bats, spiderwebs, or even Oogie Boogie's silhouette. For a more aged look, a little dry brushing with grey or dark brown paint can add depth. Beyond the coffin, there are so many other DIY elements you can add to your Nightmare Before Christmas room. I collected glass jars and painted them with silhouettes of Sally, Zero, and Jack. Filling them with LED tealights made them glow beautifully. Old picture frames can be painted black and filled with printed stills from the movie or even custom spooky portraits. Don't forget fabric! A striped black and white fabric draped over a chair or as a table runner instantly ties into the theme. For smaller details, look for dollar store finds you can customize. Plain plastic pumpkins can be painted white and given Jack's face. Spiders and cobwebs are a must, of course! And if you're feeling ambitious, a DIY spiral hill made from chicken wire and papier-mâché can be a fantastic corner piece. The key is to have fun and let your creativity flow. Every little detail adds to the overall atmosphere, making your space truly a unique Halloween Town retreat. What are your favorite Nightmare Before Christmas DIYs?
