Not even a month in and I feel so much lighter pushing code without detailed messages. I might go back later, but momentum wins.

1 day agoEdited to

... Read moreFrom personal experience, changing the way I handle commit messages has truly altered my coding workflow for the better. Initially, I always believed that detailed commit messages were indispensable for clarity and team communication. However, I found that spending too much time crafting those messages sometimes disrupted my concentration and slowed down progress, especially when I'm in a flow state. By opting for shorter or less detailed messages, I noticed a significant improvement in my momentum. It allowed me to push code more frequently and stay engaged with the tasks at hand without the barrier of composing perfect commit notes. This doesn’t mean I abandoned good version control practices entirely; rather, I learned to strike a balance that works personally while still enabling others to follow changes reasonably well. In collaborative environments, this approach might not be suitable for everyone, but it's worth experimenting with if you find yourself stuck in a cycle of over-documenting at the expense of productivity. Sometimes, agility and maintaining forward momentum in coding outweigh the benefits of exhaustive commit history. That said, if you work in a large team or on complex projects, you might consider adopting complementary tools such as detailed issue tracking or code review comments to preserve context without sacrificing speed. Ultimately, the goal is to create a workflow that keeps your productivity high while ensuring the quality and traceability of your codebase.
