Jonah is asked a lot how he got into baking and cake decorating. I think his baking interest came from growing up in a house where we baked everything due to multiple food allergies - from birthday cakes to cinnamon rolls and cookies, we made it all. He’s always loved helping in the kitchen. During the Covid era, he started making cakes and wanted to decorate them. We didn’t have a lot of decorating supplies, but he did a good job with what we had.
Then in 2022 his sister had just gotten a job at a grocery store, and he really wanted to work too. He learned pretty quick that he couldn’t get a job anywhere at age 12. So one day he told me he wanted to start a cake business. This sounds awful, but I thought about all the messes that would come from it, and I didn’t know how he would market a cake business as a 12 year old…but I was also excited for him to learn something that he had a good plan for and loved his motivation and drive. He told me he would start social media pages to advertise and also deliver cake samples to family and friends to get started. He asked for a little loan to buy some supplies and told us as soon as he started getting cake orders, he would pay us back.
That’s exactly what he did too. I’m so glad I got over thinking about a messy kitchen and let this kid do his thing. We’re so proud of him and all that he’s accomplished!
For his 5th birthday party, he wanted everyone to decorate their own cupcake. Maybe this is where it all started…🥹♥️🎂
Starting a baking business as a pre-teen might seem like a daunting task, but Jonah's story shows it can be done with passion and perseverance. Growing up in a household where baking was a way to cope with multiple food allergies, he developed his skills early on, which laid a strong foundation for his cake decorating journey. His early experiences, such as decorating cupcakes at his 5th birthday party, sparked a lifelong enthusiasm. One remarkable aspect of Jonah's venture is his initiative to handle marketing and business logistics through social media and personal outreach. This approach is a great example for young entrepreneurs on how to build a customer base with limited resources. Starting with delivering cake samples to family and friends is an excellent strategy to gain feedback and word-of-mouth promotion. For anyone thinking about launching a small food business, Jonah's story illustrates the importance of resilience and a willingness to learn from mistakes. Even without professional decorating tools, he adapted and made the best of what was available — a reminder that creativity thrives under constraints. Moreover, this narrative highlights the value of parental support in nurturing a child's interests, even when concerns about mess or marketability arise. Encouraging young talent to pursue their passions can nurture essential life skills, including responsibility, planning, and communication. If you’re considering a similar path, keep in mind that starting small, focusing on quality, and using social platforms smartly can open many doors. Jonah’s journey is heartwarming proof that with motivation and a well-thought plan, even a 12-year-old can succeed in turning a hobby into a growing business.
