Pay attention to Flags. Jonathan L. Herbert | Public Safety Educator

Jonathan L. Herbert | Public Safety Educator & Environmental Conservationist. Retail and KPI Leader - Miami-Dade Coastal Region | Haulover Beach, FL. Haulover Beach

Before entering the water, always check the beach warning flags. A red flag means dangerous surf and currents. Conditions can change quickly, especially during periods of strong rip currents.

... Read moreWhen spending a day at the beach, especially at popular spots like Haulover Beach in Miami-Dade, paying close attention to the safety flags is a must. From personal experience, I’ve noticed that many beachgoers overlook these warning signs, which can lead to dangerous situations, particularly during unpredictable weather. The flags are designed to communicate current water conditions quickly and effectively. For example, a red flag indicates high hazard due to strong surf or currents, meaning swimming is unsafe. I’ve learned the hard way that even when the weather is sunny and inviting, the ocean’s power can be deceptive. Another key safety tip is to only swim in areas supervised by lifeguards. During one beach visit, I saw a situation where a swimmer was caught in a sudden rip current and was rescued promptly by a nearby lifeguard—a reminder that their presence saves lives. Rip currents, which can pull swimmers away from shore, are especially dangerous and subtle. Knowing to swim parallel to the shore can help escape their pull. Additionally, environmental awareness plays an essential role in beach safety. At Haulover Beach, warnings about marine pests like jellyfish or stingrays are sometimes displayed, and it’s wise to heed caution signs. Observing these can prevent painful stings or injuries. Beyond personal safety, respecting the environment helps keep beaches safe and enjoyable for everyone. Simple actions like disposing of trash properly and avoiding disrupting marine habitats contribute to a healthier coastal ecosystem. In summary, before diving into the water at any Florida beach, take a moment to observe the flags, check for hazards, and swim near lifeguards. These precautions greatly enhance your safety and ensure you have a fun, worry-free day by the ocean.
