Before the Pen | Deaf Awareness Month

This week’s planner theme is close to my heart. As an Interpreter, I see every day how crucial language access is for deaf children.

📌 Fact: 90% of deaf kids are born to hearing parents, but less than 10% of those families ever learn to sign. Without access to a full language, kids experience severe delays in learning, connection, and opportunity.

Planners can be more than paper and pen—they can spark conversations, share stories, and build community. 🖊️✨

💭 What message or cause would you showcase in your own spread?

... Read moreDeaf Awareness Month is an important time to highlight the challenges deaf children face, especially regarding language access. Since 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents who often do not learn sign language, these children frequently experience delays not only in communication but also in cognitive and social development. Raising awareness through creative outlets like planners can be a powerful tool to foster understanding and inclusivity. Planners are more than just organizational tools—they offer a unique platform to share stories, spread advocacy messages, and build compassionate communities. When planners incorporate themes like deaf awareness, they help normalize conversations about deafness, encourage people to learn sign language, and ultimately promote equal access to communication. For families of deaf children, such support can be life-changing. As interpreters and advocates point out, providing full language access early in life is essential for deaf children's learning and connection to the world. Without it, they risk social isolation and missed opportunities. Encouraging hearing families to embrace sign language and engage with the deaf community can break down barriers. You can make your planner spreads impactful by incorporating educational facts, personal stories, and calls to action that invite others to understand the deaf experience. Showcasing #DeafAwareness and #BeforeThePen on social platforms helps broaden visibility and unites people passionate about accessibility and inclusion. Remember, your planner can ignite conversations that lead to real-world change. What message or cause will you highlight this month to contribute meaningfully to deaf awareness and language access advocacy?
