Collecting needs to be considered a mental illness

I am done with society normalizing this condition. This is not normal. I refuse to believe this is normal. Nobody needs this much stuff major majority of the people who deal with this condition and urge to aquire more things have empty lives, and empty savings. I’ve asked collectors. What do you have in savings? Most of them don’t even have over $100 and then they yell and complained that they can’t move out of their parent’s house. I don’t know what they expect you’re not going to move out of your parents house living like that You’re never going to have a life if you keep spending like that, they refuse to listen.

I deal with urges myself sometimes to collect and acquired things. I refuse to, even if it causes a meltdown and I have more money than most people my age due to this people tell me I’m crazy for depriving myself. I tell them they’re crazy for giving in.

If you want to have a good life and a stable life, you need to not collect anything that cost money if you collect, you are a slave.

Not to mention when you’re old and have to go to assisted-living, you can’t take any of it with you. My grandma was a big collector and when she went to assisted-living, every single thing she collected was given away and because she had no identity outside of things in the assisted-living all she does is complain about not having these objects. She was allowed to take one box in, but she couldn’t take all 50,000 of them.

This is the reality of the world and no need to deny that.

... Read moreCompulsive collecting, often overlooked, can have serious implications on an individual's mental health and financial stability. While collecting as a hobby can be harmless and fulfilling, when it crosses into the territory of compulsive behavior, it may reflect underlying psychological conditions such as hoarding disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Research by mental health professionals identifies hoarding disorder characterized by the persistent difficulty discarding possessions, regardless of their actual value, leading to clutter that disrupts living spaces and daily life. This condition often results in emotional distress, social isolation, and financial difficulties as individuals prioritize acquiring and retaining items over other life needs. Financially, compulsive collecting can exhaust savings and increase debt, limiting personal growth opportunities such as moving out or investing in education and experiences. Many collectors struggle with savings, as the urge to acquire overshadows budgeting and long-term planning. This behavior can perpetuate cycles of instability, impacting relationships and overall quality of life. From a societal perspective, normalizing excessive collecting without recognizing its potential mental health components may overlook critical intervention opportunities. Awareness and early identification can help those affected seek professional help, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, which has proven effective in managing and reducing hoarding behaviors. In later life stages, the implications of collecting become more tangible. Assisted living environments often restrict personal possessions, forcing individuals to confront the reality that material items cannot be taken with them. This transition can evoke feelings of loss and identity crisis, highlighting the importance of fostering a sense of self beyond material belongings. To promote a healthier lifestyle, individuals are encouraged to reflect on their collecting habits, assess their financial health, and seek support if compulsive behaviors emerge. Prioritizing meaningful experiences, personal growth, and emotional well-being over material accumulation can lead to greater life satisfaction and stability. Ultimately, recognizing the boundary between passion and compulsion in collecting is crucial. It enables individuals and communities to address the mental health aspects linked to accumulating possessions and support healthier, balanced lives free from the constraints of overconsumption.
