i love the hot takes on this topic. a lot of people have no respect for SAHMs and how we balance life everyday physically, mentally, and emotionally.
1. No clocking out
a 9–5 has an end of day. being a SAHM? it’s 24/7, nights, weekends, holidays. you’re always “on call.”
2. No breaks or PTO
lunch breaks???? sick days???? vacation???? don’t exist. even when you’re sick, you’re still the default caregiver. you HAVE to suck it up and work through it.
3. Emotional & mental load
it’s not just keeping kids alive, it’s tracking appointments, meals, nap schedules, activities, laundry, cleaning, plus remembering everything for everyone. EVERYONE. that invisible mental work piles up.
4. Constant unpredictability
a 9–5 usually has structure. at home, your boss is a toddler… moody, irrational, and explosive. schedules change in seconds.
5. No pay, no promotions
it’s unpaid labor. No raises, no recognition, no promotions, yet it’s full-time and highly skilled. and NO sometimes we don’t ask to be SAHMs.
6. Social isolation
at work, you have coworkers. at home, with CHILDREN. being lonely can hit hard.
