... Read moreOkay, let's get real about mom life and the friendships we navigate through it. It's tough, right? We all have our strong opinions, and sometimes those 'hot takes' can really shake up our social circles. For me, one of my biggest ones is feeling like *I can't be friends with people who don't care for their children*. Now, before you come at me, let me explain! It’s not about judging every single parenting choice, but there’s a fundamental level of engagement and love that, when missing, just makes it hard for me to connect. How can I relate to someone who doesn't prioritize their child's well-being in a way I understand? It’s a core value difference that impacts everything.
Then there's the whole discussion around education. My hot take? *PARENTS should be responsible for their child's education if possible, public education is a tool to help. You are your child's first teacher*. This means I feel a deep responsibility to be involved in my kids' learning beyond just sending them to school. When I see other parents completely disengaged or expecting schools to do absolutely everything, it sometimes makes me wonder about our differing approaches. It’s not about homeschooling everyone, but about active participation. It shapes how I view their priorities, and sometimes, if our educational philosophies are worlds apart, it can create a quiet tension in our mom friendships.
And let's not forget the age-old debate captured by *CO-SLEEPING THAT IS THE SENTENCE*. Phew, just saying it out loud brings out the strong reactions! Whether you’re a co-sleeper or firmly in the separate-beds camp, this is such a personal choice that often feels heavily judged. I’ve had friends who were so against it, and others who swear by it. My stance on this, whatever it might be, often colors how I perceive parenting choices and can subtly influence who I feel a kinship with. It’s funny how such a private decision can become a public 'hot take' among moms.
Moving onto playtime, here's another one: Being bored is very important for kids! Seriously, I firmly believe in letting kids experience boredom. It's where creativity sparks, where they learn to entertain themselves, and frankly, where they learn resilience. I sometimes see parents who feel the need to constantly entertain their children, with every minute scheduled. While I get wanting to provide opportunities, there's a balance. When you're trying to plan playdates, and one parent always needs a structured activity while you're happy to just let the kids figure it out, it can be a mini-clash of parenting styles.
And finally, for a lighter, more relatable hot take that still sparks discussion: *The Moana soundtrack slaps & I don't mind listening to it on repeat at all MY 20 THeRe I saiD it*. Yes, I said it! Some parents dread the endless loop of kids' movie soundtracks, but honestly, Moana is a bop. It's a fun, low-stakes hot take that shows we don't have to agree on everything, and sometimes, our most 'controversial' opinions are just our personal preferences. It’s these shared (or unshared) experiences that make up the fabric of our mom friendships. So, what are your unfiltered mom hot takes? Do any of these resonate or ruffle your feathers? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on how our parenting philosophies shape our connections with other moms!
Totally agree. I have had to drop a close friendship with someone in the past because they weren’t taking proper care of their children. It hurt in the moment but I can’t be around anyone who doesn’t put their own children first, it says enough to me about their character and the type of person they are.
Also can’t be friends with people who don’t parent their kids! I don’t want them chaos and neither do my kids!
