Avoiding flat spots on your baby’s head

flat spots can be a little scary if you’re a new mom. but there’s sooo many ways to prevent any flat spots!!

1. tummy time!!!

start with a few minutes at a time, multiple times per day. use toys, mirrors, or get down face-to-face to make it fun.

2. rotate their head during sleep

always place baby on their back to sleep (safe sleep), but gently turn their head to the opposite side each night.

3. alternate feeding arms

switch the arm you hold them in so their neck isn’t always turned the same way.

4. different carry positions.

try upright babywearing, football hold, or alternating arms. avoid keeping baby in the same position for too long.

5. limit time in car seat, etc!

car seat, swing, bouncer, stroller are all fine in moderation, but try to keep total time low when not traveling. floor time is much better for their head shape and development.

6. encourage them to look both ways!

put toys, you, or interesting objects on the non-preferred side to gently stretch the neck.

7. check for tight neck muscles!!! (Torticollis)

if baby always looks one direction, they might have mild torticollis.

‼️signs:

• Head always tilted

• Prefers turning only one way

• Hates looking the opposite direction

if yes, mention it to your pediatrician!!!!

... Read moreFlat spots on a baby's head, medically known as positional plagiocephaly, can understandably cause worry for many new parents. Fortunately, with consistent care and a few mindful habits, you can help prevent these flat spots from developing. Tummy time is one of the most important activities to promote healthy head shape and muscle development. Starting with a few minutes several times a day increases neck strength and encourages babies to move their heads freely. Using toys or mirrors during tummy time can make this an engaging and enjoyable experience for your little one. Another simple but effective method is routinely rotating your baby's head during sleep. Always follow safe sleep guidelines by placing your baby on their back to prevent SIDS, but gently turn the head to different sides each night to distribute pressure evenly. This also encourages balanced muscle development in the neck. Alternating feeding arms helps prevent your baby’s neck from becoming stiff on one side. By switching hands when feeding, you reduce the chance of the baby consistently turning their head to one side, which can contribute to flat spots. Different carrying positions provide varied support and reduce prolonged pressure on any one part of the skull. Try methods such as upright babywearing or the football hold, and ensure you change positions often. Limiting time spent in car seats, swings, bouncers, and strollers is essential. While these are convenient, excessive use can put prolonged pressure on the back of the head. Floor time on a soft blanket allows your baby to move freely and supports natural skull shaping. Encouraging your baby to look both ways is also beneficial. Placing toys or interesting objects on the side they prefer less invites natural neck stretching and movement. Be aware of torticollis—a condition where neck muscles are tight and cause the head to tilt or favor one side. Signs include a consistently tilted head, a preference for turning to one side, and resistance to moving the neck oppositely. If you notice these, consult your pediatrician promptly. Early intervention can include physical therapy to improve neck mobility and prevent flat spots. By incorporating these tips into daily caregiving routines, you not only reduce the risk of flat spots but also support your baby’s overall physical development and comfort. Consistency and observation are key, so monitor your baby's head shape and consult healthcare professionals if you have concerns. Creating a nurturing environment with varied positions and active engagement makes a big difference in your little one’s healthy growth.
