Never make permanent decisions
Hey everyone! So glad you're here. Today's #PhraseOfTheDay, and it’s a powerful one that really resonated with me this past Sunday: ‘Never make permanent decisions based on temporary emotions.’ Have you ever found yourself in a situation where your feelings were running high – maybe you were incredibly angry, deeply sad, or even overwhelmingly excited – and you felt an urge to make a big, life-altering choice right then and there? I know I have! It’s so easy to get swept away by the intensity of the moment. We might lash out at a loved one, quit a job in a fit of frustration, or make a huge purchase fuelled by impulsive joy. But what happens when those temporary emotions fade? Often, we're left with the consequences of decisions that don't truly align with our long-term goals or values. I remember one time, I was so frustrated with a project at work, I almost sent a scathing email that would have burned bridges. Luckily, I took a step back, waited a few hours, and realized my anger was temporary. The next morning, I approached the issue calmly and found a much better solution. This saying isn't about ignoring your feelings; it's about acknowledging them and giving yourself the space to process them before acting. Our emotions are important signals, but they shouldn't be the sole drivers of permanent choices. Think about it: a breakup spurred by a fleeting argument, a career change out of momentary boredom, or a big financial investment made during an emotional high. These are the kinds of decisions that can lead to regret when clarity returns. So, how do we practice this wisdom? For me, it starts with a pause. When I feel a strong emotion, I try to hit the mental brakes. I might go for a walk, journal my thoughts, or talk it through with a trusted friend. Sometimes, just naming the emotion – 'I'm feeling incredibly anxious right now' – can help create a little distance. I also find it helpful to ask myself: 'Will I still feel this way in a week? A month? A year?' If the answer is uncertain, it's a sign to hold off on that permanent decision. While the exact 'source' of 'don't make permanent decisions based on temporary emotions' is often attributed to various speakers and self-help gurus over time, its wisdom is timeless and universal. It's a reminder to cultivate emotional intelligence and self-awareness. It's about empowering ourselves to act from a place of calm reflection, rather than reactive impulse. This Sunday, as I reflected on this phrase, it felt like a gentle nudge to always choose wisdom over fleeting feelings. Let's all try to give ourselves that gift of pause and reflection before making those big, life-shaping choices. It truly can make all the difference!
