Dorm life
After my first year of college I learned so much.
Here’s what I did to have the college experience with no prior experience and knowledge of how the college life works.
To start I had, you can say I had a jump start on networking because I was in a program with others like me. And as you can see in the third pic those are my girls and my best friends because the program brought us together. So I recommend being in a program or a club where it’ll be easier to connect with others and doing something you’re passionate about.
An on campus job is another way to connect and meet others. For me I work at my merch store where everyone goes in, even the President and big people from campus go in. Which gives me the opportunity to talk to them and let them know who I am just in case I need them for my future at my school.
Going to ANY social events is another way to connect with others. Whether that is sporting event, dorm hall your RA came up with, and or class events. Also attending class and talking with your classmates can be another way to connect with others; you can start by inviting them to study or go grab a cup of coffee.
Lastly, living on campus and more specifically in a dorm I recommend leaving your room dorm open. It will allow those walking by to stop and say Hi. Who knows they can be your forever best friends. Be open to meeting those on your floor. It’s nice knowing who your neighbors are. It won’t be as awkward when you see them in the bathrooms.
Balance: know when you have met your limit for the day or week. Yes we are they for our studies but it is OKAY to go out and have fun. Just know how to manage your time with everything you have going on! I recommend having a planner to be able to write down everything you have to do and when your due dates are. It will allow you to not be as stressed and know when your allowed free time to breath and relax and to enjoy your hobbies or just go out with friends!
But all in all, HAVE FUN!! Be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Staying where you’re comfortable will limit you to move forward in life and experience college at its fullest. (That’s coming from someone who was VERY shy and timid first quarter. I am now more talkative and open to network.)
Navigating dorm life can be overwhelming for new college students, but it’s also a unique opportunity for personal growth and social interaction. Many students find that participation in dorm activities or campus programs significantly enhances their college experience. Prioritize getting involved in clubs or organizations that align with your interests—this not only fosters connections but also enriches your learning environment. Consider taking advantage of on-campus employment, which provides a great way to meet diverse individuals, including fellow students and faculty. For instance, working in a well-frequented merch store can give you the chance to network with higher-ups on campus. Being present at various social events, from sports games to study groups, is also crucial for building a community. These gatherings can be both fun and educational, giving you insights that go beyond the classroom. Enhancing your living experience can start with simple practices, such as keeping your dorm door open to encourage friendly conversations with neighbors. This small step can lead to meaningful friendships that enrich your college life. Remember to strike a balance between your studies and social activities; effective time management is key. Tools like planners can help you stay organized and reduce stress. Prioritize self-care and make room for downtime to recharge. Ultimately, embracing opportunities and stepping out of your comfort zone are vital for making the most of your college journey. Whether you’re shy or outgoing, adapting to dorm life can be a fulfilling experience that shapes your future.
