Stop Asking Everyone Before You Trust Yourself
You may think you are asking for advice.
But sometimes, you are actually asking someone else to carry the risk of your decision.
Because if they agree with you, maybe you can finally relax.
Maybe you weren’t “too sensitive.”
Maybe you didn’t misunderstand.
Maybe you have a right to be uncomfortable.
Maybe the decision you want to make is reasonable after all.
And if things go wrong?
At least you weren’t the only one who thought it was the right choice.
That is where constantly seeking reassurance can become more than simply wanting another perspective.
Sometimes it is what happens when you have learned to distrust yourself.
Maybe your feelings were dismissed often enough that you started needing evidence before honoring them.
Maybe disagreeing with someone once came with conflict, criticism, guilt, or withdrawal.
Maybe being wrong felt so uncomfortable that asking everyone else became a way of protecting yourself from responsibility, regret, or rejection.
So now you reread the text.
Send the screenshot.
Explain every detail.
Ask, “What do you think?”
Then ask someone else.
Not because you have no inner voice.
But because somewhere along the way, other people’s certainty started feeling safer than your own.
And rebuilding self-trust does not mean becoming so independent that you never ask for advice.
It means changing the order.
Before asking, “What do you think?”
Try asking:
What do I think?
What did I notice before anyone explained it away?
What feels right to me?
What am I afraid will happen if I trust my own judgment?
Am I looking for perspective—or permission?
Then seek guidance if you need it.
Listen.
Consider.
Learn.
But let other people’s wisdom sit beside your own—not on top of it.
Because the goal of self-trust is not to always be right.
You will misunderstand things sometimes.
You will make decisions you later change.
You will occasionally wish you had chosen differently.
Self-trust is knowing that even when that happens, you will not abandon yourself for having been human.
And maybe that is the deeper work:
not becoming someone who never needs reassurance—
but becoming someone who no longer needs permission to hear her own voice. 💕
