Border collies

It's true, my Border Collies, Cora and Cooper, absolutely light up when they see snow! I often get asked, 'Do Border Collies really love snow?' And from my experience, it's a resounding yes! I believe it's because of their incredible energy levels and their thick, double-layered coats that protect them from the cold. They just seem built for it. Watching them zoom around, chasing snowflakes, reminds me of their natural herding instincts, even if they're just 'herding' imaginary sheep or each other in the backyard! Playing in the snow isn't just fun; it’s a great way to burn off some of that famous Border Collie energy. However, I’ve learned a few things to keep them safe. Always make sure their paws are protected from ice and salt – sometimes I use paw balm or even dog booties if we're going for a longer walk. I also keep an eye on how long they're out, even though they seem limitless, to prevent hypothermia, especially on super cold days. And fresh water is key, as they can get dehydrated just as easily in winter. Speaking of my furry best friends, Cora is a beautiful black, white, and tan Border Collie, while Cooper is a striking brown and white. Their colors are quite common, but Border Collies actually come in such a wide array of shades! Beyond the classic black and white, you’ll find them in red and white, blue merle, red merle, sable, and even brindle (which some might call 'atigrado' due to its striped appearance). Merle patterns are particularly striking, with mottled patches of color. It's fascinating how diverse their coats can be, though a good Border Collie's temperament and intelligence are always more important than their color. If you’re thinking about getting a Border Collie puppy, or 'cachorro' as they say in Spanish, prepare for an energetic, intelligent, and highly trainable companion! I can only imagine how much mischief Cora and Cooper got into as little ones. Puppyhood with a Border Collie is all about early socialization, consistent training, and providing plenty of mental stimulation. They thrive on having a 'job' to do, even if it's just learning new tricks or puzzle toys. Starting early with positive reinforcement helps channel their incredible drive into positive behaviors. They need lots of opportunities to explore the world safely and meet new people and dogs to grow into well-adjusted adults. Choosing a responsible breeder who prioritizes health and temperament is also super important for getting a happy, healthy pup. My life with Cora and Cooper has been an adventure, full of loyalty, learning, and snowy zoomies!
