Lick mat!

Seeing my pups, Cora and Cooper, happily engaged with their lick mats each morning is such a joy! It’s incredible how something so simple can bring so much calm and entertainment to their day. I often get asked what I put on their mats, and honestly, it’s usually a rotation of their absolute favorites: yogurt, peanut butter, and banana. Let me tell you why these ingredients are fantastic and how I prepare them. First up, plain yogurt. It’s a wonderful source of probiotics, which are great for gut health. Always make sure it’s plain, unsweetened, and ideally full-fat or low-fat, not sugar-free, as artificial sweeteners can be harmful. I often spread a generous layer of plain yogurt directly onto the mat or mix it with some mashed banana and yogurt for a creamier texture. It’s cooling and satisfying, especially after a morning walk. Next, we have peanut butter. This is a high-value treat that dogs absolutely go crazy for! It’s fantastic for sticking to the mat and keeping them occupied for ages. A critical warning here: always, always check your peanut butter label to ensure it does NOT contain Xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute that is highly toxic to dogs. Once you’ve confirmed it’s safe, a good dollop of xylitol-free peanut butter can be spread thinly or mixed with other ingredients. My pups love a combo of banana and peanut butter swirled together – it’s like a healthy, delicious dessert for them! And finally, banana. This fruit is rich in potassium and vitamins, making it a healthy addition. I usually mash it up well before spreading it. Sometimes, I’ll even freeze little slices of banana to add texture or mix mashed banana with the plain yogurt for a different consistency. It’s soft, easy to digest, and most dogs find it irresistible. The beauty of lick mats is the endless variety you can create. Besides these staples, I sometimes sprinkle a few crushed dog treats on top for extra motivation, or mix in a spoonful of pumpkin puree (plain, not pie filling) or a few mashed berries. The goal is to keep things interesting so they don't get bored, which helps maintain their enthusiasm for the enrichment. This rotation also prevents them from eating the exact same thing over and over, which I'm sure they appreciate! Beyond just keeping them busy while I quickly clean up the house, lick mats offer significant benefits. They are excellent for mental stimulation, helping to reduce anxiety and stress, especially if your dog is prone to nervousness or separation anxiety. The repetitive licking motion is incredibly calming. They can also aid in dental health by scraping food off the tongue and gums, and they're perfect for slowing down fast eaters. My advice? Start with small amounts of new ingredients to ensure your dog tolerates them well. And don't forget to freeze the prepared lick mat for about 30 minutes to an hour (or longer!) to make the licking last even longer. It’s a simple way to boost your dog’s happiness and well-being.
