... Read moreAs a dedicated food explorer in Houston, my mission recently led me to two highly talked-about Vietnamese spots: Pho Sapa and Simply Pho Houston. I was on the hunt for that perfect bowl of pho, and let me tell you, both places offer a delightful experience, but each has its unique charm.
First up, Pho Sapa. My visit there felt like stepping into a cozy corner of Vietnam. I opted for their classic beef pho, and it came in a beautiful white bowl filled with large pieces of tender beef and bone marrow. The broth was incredibly rich and aromatic, clearly simmered for hours to perfection. I loved customizing my bowl with a generous plate of fresh Vietnamese pho garnishes, including bunches of fragrant basil, crisp bean sprouts, zesty lime wedges, and fiery sliced green jalapeño peppers. The balance of savory meat, silky rice noodles, and refreshing herbs was just divine. I also noticed other diners enjoying their spicy Vietnamese noodle soup, garnished with shrimp and various meats, and even a plate of stir-fried diced beef with colorful bell peppers and onions, served with fried rice, which looked equally tempting.
Next, I ventured to Simply Pho Houston. This spot had a slightly more modern, vibrant feel. Here, I went for their pho with sliced beef meatballs and plenty of chopped green onions. The broth at Simply Pho was lighter, yet still deeply flavorful and comforting. It had a clean taste that really let the quality of the ingredients shine through. They also brought out a fresh plate of garnishes, just as essential for that authentic pho experience. I observed that they also offer fantastic sides; one table near me had a golden-brown savory crepe, possibly Banh Xeo, which looked absolutely delicious. To wash it all down, a refreshing iced lemonade with lemon slices and a red and white striped straw was the perfect complement to the rich flavors.
Comparing the two, it's a tough call because they both excel in different ways. If you're craving a deeply robust, almost stew-like broth with generous cuts like oxtail and bone marrow, Pho Sapa might be your go-to. Their traditional offerings, like the white bowl of Vietnamese pho featuring sliced beef meatballs and chopped green onions, are top-notch. However, if you prefer a slightly lighter, yet still incredibly flavorful broth that allows the freshness of the herbs and quality of the beef to be the star, Simply Pho Houston is an excellent choice. Both provide ample fresh green leafy vegetables, including lettuce and mint, ensuring you can tailor your pho to your liking.
Ultimately, both Pho Sapa and Simply Pho Houston offer an authentic and delicious pho experience. It really comes down to what you're in the mood for. For a hearty, bone-marrow rich broth, Pho Sapa wins. For a slightly cleaner, vibrant broth and perhaps a wider variety of non-pho dishes like their stir-fried options, Simply Pho is fantastic. Why not try both and decide for yourself? Houston is lucky to have such amazing Vietnamese culinary gems!
