Blueberry and strawberry smoothie

We our smoothie fans in this house. My kids love to make smoothies. And I love to be able to give them a good dose of fruit in the morning! Smoothies can be relatively one of the cheaper healthy breakfasts, especially recently. The cost of eggs today, on the other hand…🫣 let me do the math for you!

🍓ingredients and 💲where we got ‘em:

-frozen strawberries and blueberries, about a cup each;

^~we get big bags for $10 from King Soopers and they store for quite a while! For each time we make smoothies, the cost of two fruits is roughly…

~$1.50

-Oikos Greek Yogurt

^~we get these from Costco in a 18 pack of personal sized yogurts for roughly $15. I use 1 for every person eating the smoothie that day.

~$2.50

-Milk

^~ we get ours from King Soopers for about $4 a gallon. We only use about 2 cups of milk, again depending on how many are eating the smoothie that day.

~$0.50

-white chocolate chips!

^~ this part is totally optional, but my kids love their candy. This holds them over until after dinner. I only let them put about 12 into the blender- this is just over half a serving size. It’s about $5 a bag and we can also store these in the freezer for quite a while.

~$0.15

Your total for smoothies for three people is roughly $4.65

... Read moreHey smoothie lovers! Ever find yourself craving a delicious strawberry smoothie and tempted by the convenience of a drive-thru? I totally get it! We've all been there. But let me tell you, since I started making my own strawberry and blueberry smoothies at home, I've honestly felt so much better about what my family is drinking – and my wallet loves it too! One of the biggest reasons I switched? Knowing exactly what goes into our blender. When you grab a smoothie from a fast-food place, you often don't have a clue about the added sugars, artificial flavors, or even the quality of fruit. At home, I can pick fresh or frozen berries, control the sweetness, and even sneak in some spinach without anyone noticing! It's pure happiness knowing I'm giving my kids a genuinely healthy treat, especially for a 'New Year, New Smoothies' mindset. There’s a certain satisfaction in holding a freshly made glass, knowing all the goodness inside. And let's talk budget. My original post breaks down how I make a delicious berry smoothie for three people for less than $5. Compare that to buying a few smoothies out, and the savings are huge! It's truly one of the cheapest healthy breakfasts you can whip up, making healthy eating accessible for everyone. Another perk is the endless customization! While my kids love the white chocolate chips (a little treat!), we often experiment. Sometimes we add a banana for extra creaminess, a spoonful of chia seeds for fiber, or even a dash of vanilla extract. You can adjust the thickness with more or less milk, or even use orange juice for a tangier kick. It makes breakfast exciting and ensures everyone in the family gets exactly what they like! Plus, it's become such a fun family activity. My kids love helping me measure out the frozen berries and yogurt. It teaches them a bit about cooking and healthy eating, and they're always so proud of the smoothies they 'make' themselves. It’s a wonderful way to bond and instill good habits from a young age. To make your homemade smoothie experience even better, here are a few tips I've learned: Always keep frozen fruit on hand: It's cheaper than fresh, lasts longer, and makes your smoothie super cold and thick without needing ice (which can dilute the flavor). I always stock up on big bags of frozen strawberries and blueberries. Experiment with liquids: Milk is great, but try almond milk, oat milk, or even a little fruit juice for different flavors and textures. Water can also work if you're looking for something lighter. Boost the nutrition: A handful of spinach or kale blends in seamlessly and adds tons of vitamins without changing the taste. Protein powder or nut butter can make it a more filling meal replacement, perfect for busy days. Prep ahead: For busy mornings, you can pre-portion all your dry ingredients (frozen fruit, protein powder, seeds) into freezer bags. Just dump it into the blender with liquid in the morning – it’s a lifesaver! Don't forget the yogurt: Greek yogurt adds protein and a lovely creamy texture. It's a game-changer for satiety and gives that wonderful smoothness. So, if you're looking for a delightful, healthy, and budget-friendly alternative to those fast-food smoothie cravings, give my homemade strawberry and blueberry smoothie a try. It's a simple, affordable way to bring pure happiness to your morning and kickstart a healthy routine, just like the 'New Year, New Smoothies' vibe we often embrace!
