HIDDEN GEMS OF THE AMALFI COAST
I can’t gatekeep these cities! Positano and Cinque Terre are beautiful, but they are also SO popular and staring to become overrun by tourists. In my opinion, when I travel to a destination chock full of tourist I feel as though you lose a bit of that authentic experience that we look for when we travel.
If you are dying to experience the beauty and charm of the Amalfi coast, but dread the crowds that come with it : these towns are great alternatives!
Cetara : a cozy traditional and authentic fishing village. This town is exactly how you would picture a fishing town from the last century. This town is a gastronomical hotspot with beautiful beaches!
Atrani : often referred to as Amalfi’s twin, it is the smallest town in Italy! This town is full of idyllic winding streets and alleys. it is the place you should visit if you want to find out what Italy is truly all about. Even though Atrani is just a short drive away from Amalfi, the famous and bustling holiday spot, it remains unspoiled by mass tourism and is one of Italy’s best-kept secrets.
Praiano : One of the very best ways to skip the crowds in Positano is by staying in the neighboring town of Praiano instead. Just a fifteen-minute drive away, the quiet fishing village of Praiano is packed with sleepy charm and local flavor that can sometimes be hard to find along the well-beaten path of the Amalfi Coast. In Praiano you will find small lanes, narrow flights of steps, and pretty, and pastel-colored cottages.
Ravello : Ravello has been named the city of music as it hosts one of the countries best music festivals. In Ravello you will find many luxury villas and lush gardens, filled with stone pathways. There is much to explore away from the travel crowds here!

That's exactly why I went on a mission to find those truly special 'less touristy towns' that still capture the heart of authentic Italy. And let me tell you, I found some absolute 'hidden gems' that completely stole my heart! First up, Cetara. If you're searching for a genuine 'traditional fishing village' experience, this is it. Unlike some of the busier spots, Cetara feels like stepping back in time. The vibrant harbor with its colorful boats, the smell of fresh seafood, and the friendly locals make it a true 'gastronomical hotspot'. I spent an afternoon simply enjoying the 'cetara beach', watching the fishermen, and indulging in the local specialty – anchovies! Seriously, don't leave without trying them. It’s the kind of place where you can relax, eat incredible food, and truly unwind without feeling overwhelmed. It’s certainly one of the best 'cetara amalfi coast fishing village beach' experiences you can have. Then there's Atrani, often overlooked but incredibly charming. It's known as the smallest town in Italy, and it truly feels like a secret. With its 'narrow winding streets' and ancient arches, it’s a delight to get lost in. Even though it's just a stone's throw from bustling Amalfi, Atrani maintains a serene atmosphere, making it a perfect 'hidden gem' for those seeking peace. I loved just sitting in the piazza, sipping coffee, and soaking in the local life. It offers some of the 'best views on the coast' if you take the time to explore its hidden corners. Praiano quickly became my 'good homebase' for exploring the central Amalfi Coast. It's wonderfully 'laidback and friendly', a refreshing contrast to the energetic pace of its popular neighbors. You'll find 'lots of shops, cafes, restaurants' tucked away, offering delicious local fare without the inflated prices. I loved strolling through its quiet lanes, admiring the pastel-colored houses, and enjoying breathtaking sunsets over the sea. It truly feels like a local's secret, offering a more residential and authentic feel if you're looking for 'positano alternatives'. And for those who love elevated beauty, Ravello is a must. This 'hilltop town' provides some of the most spectacular panoramic views you'll ever witness. It’s famous for its elegant villas and 'lush gardens', like Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, which are absolutely stunning to wander through. Ravello has a more refined, artistic vibe, and despite its beauty, it manages to maintain a sense of tranquility, especially away from the main square. It’s perfect for a romantic escape or simply to enjoy breathtaking vistas and cultural events. Choosing one of these 'amalfi coast hidden gems' instead of the usual tourist hotspots allowed me to have an incredibly rich and memorable trip. If you're dreaming of an 'off the beaten path amalfi coast' adventure, these towns offer a beautiful, authentic slice of Italian paradise without the overwhelming crowds.
