Hidden Gems on The Big Island of Hawaii - Part 7

1. Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach

This unique black sand beach is a haven for turtles. You can often spot them basking in the sun or swimming close to shore. It’s a beautiful and serene spot to visit!

Location: Near Naalehu, on the southeastern coast of the island.

How to Get There: From Kailua-Kona, take Highway 11 south for about 55 miles. It’s a scenic drive that takes around 1.5 hours.

2. Kiholo Bay

Known for its brightest turquoise blue water, Kiholo Bay is a stunning and less crowded spot. It’s perfect for a peaceful swim or a relaxing day by the water!

Location: Along the Kohala Coast, north of Kailua-Kona.

How to Get There: Drive north on Highway 19 from Kailua-Kona for about 20 miles. Look for the Kiholo State Park Reserve sign and follow the trail to the bay.

3. Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park

This park is not only rich in cultural history but also home to many turtles. You can enjoy both the natural beauty and the historical significance of this hidden gem.

Location: Just north of Kailua-Kona.

How to Get There: From Kailua-Kona, head north on Highway 19 for about 3 miles. Turn left onto Kealakehe Parkway and follow the signs to the park entrance.

Oregon Welcomes You! Opal Lake: This has been a fav spot of mine since I was little. This lake is perfect for canoeing, paddle boarding and swimming! From the Portland Metro Area, it’s about a 40 minute drive and about a 2 hour long hike. Make sure your dressed properly for wether conditions.
