The Right Way to Wash Different Pots & Pans

I used to only have nonstick pans and pots. I didn’t know much about other materials until I got this set of cookware.

It’s like “wow! I need to wash them differently to have them last longer😬”. On the other hand is I don’t need to worry about the coating come off and I need to change once in a while. I still keep one for convenience 😆

Here’s my quick do’s and don’ts for stainless steel, nonstick, cast iron, iron wok and enameled Dutch ovens, so they can stay shiny, nonstick for almost a year now and I hope they can last forever.

Which material of pans and pots you use the most in the kitchen?

... Read moreYou know that feeling when your favorite pan just doesn't look as shiny or perform as it used to? I've been there! For years, I thought cleaning all my pots was a one-size-fits-all deal. But discovering the right way to care for each type of cookware has been a game-changer, not just for how my kitchen looks, but for how long my pans actually last. I'm excited to share what I've learned, especially for those stubborn stainless steel and tricky cast iron pieces. Let's talk about stainless steel. These are workhorses, but can get discolored and stained. My absolute secret weapon for making them sparkle again is a combination of baking soda and vinegar. For everyday cleaning, warm dish soap and a soft sponge work. But for tougher, baked-on messes? First, make a paste with baking soda and a little water. Spread it over the stained areas for 15-20 minutes. Then, pour a bit of vinegar directly onto the paste – watch it fizz! This reaction helps lift grime. Use a non-abrasive scrubber (definitely no steel wool) and gently scrub. Rinse thoroughly with hot water and, here’s a crucial tip: dry immediately with a clean towel to prevent water spots. This step makes all the difference in keeping them shiny! Now, cast iron is a whole different beast, but so rewarding. The biggest rule I learned? No dish soap! Soap strips away the precious seasoning layer. Instead, after cooking, I just scrape out any food bits. Then, I wash it with only hot water and a stiff brush or non-abrasive sponge. If something’s really stuck, a sprinkle of coarse salt and a little scrubbing works like magic. After washing, I immediately place the pan back on the stove over medium heat to evaporate any remaining water. Once dry and still warm, I apply a very thin layer of high smoke point oil (like grapeseed or vegetable oil) with a paper towel, wiping off excess. This re-seasons the pan and keeps it protected. It feels a bit like a ritual, but it’s worth it for that perfectly seasoned surface! And what about those trusty nonstick pans? The key is gentle care to preserve that coating. Always use a soft sponge and mild soap – harsh scrubbers or abrasive cleaners are a big no-no. I’ve learned that putting them in the dishwasher can also degrade the coating, so I always hand wash mine. For my iron wok, similar to cast iron, I avoid soap to maintain its seasoning. Just hot water only and a good scrub with a brush, then drying and re-oiling is my routine. It keeps that beautiful dark patina and nonstick qualities intact. Finally, my beloved enameled Dutch ovens. These are gorgeous but also need specific care. I always wash them with warm soapy water. If I have some cooked-on food, a good soak usually loosens it. For stubborn marks, a paste of baking soda and water can work wonders. A major warning: never put a hot enameled pot under cold water, as sudden temperature changes can cause thermal shock and crack the enamel. And again, no steel wool here either! It might seem like a lot of rules, but once you get into the rhythm, these simple cleaning methods become second nature. Taking these few extra steps really has extended the life of my cookware, saving me money and keeping my kitchen looking its best. Happy cooking (and cleaning)!
