Lagos
2024/7/2 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so my recent trip to Lagos, Nigeria, was absolutely unforgettable, and I just had to share some of my personal tips for truly experiencing the city like a local. Forget the usual tourist traps; I was on a mission to uncover those unique local spots and hidden gems that make Lagos so vibrant. One of my absolute favorite ways to dive into the local culture was through its incredible food scene. Wandering through the bustling street scenes, I discovered countless fruit stalls overflowing with exotic produce I'd never seen before. Don't be shy – try everything! From juicy mangoes that taste like sunshine to refreshing soursop, it's a feast for the senses. I also made it a point to seek out small, unassuming local restaurants – often called 'bukas' – where you can savor authentic Nigerian dishes like Jollof Rice, Egusi Soup, or Suya (grilled meat skewers). Trust me, these are the places where the flavors truly come alive, and you'll often find yourself sharing a table with friendly locals, adding to the whole experience. Beyond the delicious food, Lagos is a treasure trove of art and history. I was mesmerized by the sheer amount of creativity everywhere. From intricate masks and powerful sculptures to vibrant paintings adorning galleries and even public spaces, the city breathes art. I spent a whole afternoon exploring a local art market, chatting with the artists and learning the stories behind their magnificent pieces. It’s not just about buying souvenirs; it’s about connecting with the rich artistic heritage. There are also several museums that offer deep dives into Nigeria's past, showcasing artifacts that tell tales of ancient kingdoms and colonial history. These sites are truly hidden gems for anyone wanting to understand the soul of Lagos. Exploring the cityscapes itself is an adventure. One day, my group and I decided to simply walk through different neighborhoods, observing the daily life. The energy is infectious! From the organized chaos of traffic to the lively chatter of vendors and the vibrant colors everywhere, it's a sensory overload in the best possible way. We stumbled upon a beautiful park that offered a serene escape from the urban hustle, a perfect spot to relax and people-watch. Don't be afraid to venture off the main roads; that’s where you’ll find those truly unique local spots and surprising discoveries, whether it's a hidden batik workshop or a spontaneous street performance. To make your visit even more special, I highly recommend engaging with the locals. Nigerians are incredibly hospitable and eager to share their culture. Ask for recommendations for places to eat or things to see – you'll often get the best advice that way. Taking a ride in a 'danfo' (local bus) or a 'keke' (tricycle) can also be an experience in itself, giving you a real feel for the city's pulse. This second visit really solidified my love for Lagos; it’s a city that continuously reveals new layers, offering unforgettable experiences around every corner. So, if you're looking for an adventure that goes beyond the ordinary, put Lagos, Nigeria, on your list – you won't regret exploring its unique local charm!

A few places we loved in London this November 🇬🇧
London in November was such a good mix of exploring and slowing down. We walked everywhere, took the Tube, found cute spots for tea, and stopped at all the places we’ve always wanted to see — Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the bridge views, and the prettiest storefronts getting ready for the season.
