New Curly Hair Routine
It has been a challenge for me to figure out my hair because it has been changing a lot. Sometimes the products that I’ve always used just stops working. I bought a new shampoo and conditioner by Laura Polko and this is my hair on day 4!!! Usually by day 4 it’s all smashed together and ready to create dreads 😭

I also, mask and oil 2x a week.
I’m thinking of buying another shampoo and conditioner to alternate. Any recommendations?

Generally, natural curly hair is classified into types ranging from 2a (wavy) to 4c (coily). Understanding your type helps you pick products that truly cater to your hair's needs, rather than just guessing. For instance, if you have wavier hair (2a-2c), you might find that heavy creams weigh your curls down, making them 'smashed together' by day 4. Lighter mousses or curl-defining gels designed for volume might be your best bet, focusing on repair and moisture without over-saturating. On the other hand, those with tighter curls (3a-3c) often need more moisture and definition, benefiting from richer leave-in conditioners and consistent styling products. Coily hair (4a-4c) typically craves intense hydration, strengthening treatments, and natural oils to prevent breakage and enhance elasticity. My journey has taught me that even within one 'type,' there are variations. My hair tends to need a balance of moisture and strength, which is why I've been experimenting a lot. The OCR content mentioned products for 'volume, repair, and moisture' – these are exactly the pillars I focus on for my curl type. I make sure my routine includes a good strengthening leave-in conditioner and a reliable curl-defining gel. And, just like the image suggests, incorporating a natural oil is crucial for maintaining overall hair health and shine, especially when frizz tries to creep in. Don't forget about porosity either! This refers to how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture. Low porosity hair, which is common in many natural curly hair types, can benefit from gentle heat during deep conditioning to help products penetrate. High porosity hair, often damaged or chemically treated, needs products that seal in moisture. It's truly a journey of trial and error, but once you start understanding your hair's unique characteristics, those frustrating 'dread' days become fewer and farther between.
