Here are a few tips to ease yourself when life is honestly just life’ing.
1. Wake up early, drink some water, and go on a morning stroll - Early mornings are not for the weak, trust me… I am the weak!! 😂 But when my days get super stressful, a nice morning stroll to start the day is super therapeutic. It’s a great way to ease my mind and let go of some of the stress.
2. Pray 🙏🏾 - When life gets tough, take it to God. He knows exactly what you’re going through, and He’s got a plan. Like it says in Philippians 4:6-7, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you’ll experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.” Trust in Him, ask for strength and guidance, and He’ll lead you to a place of peace and clarity.
3. Journaling… I’ll say it again… JOURNALING!!! - Go to TJ Maxx, Target, Office Depot, IDC!! Find the cutest little journal and WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING!!! I cannot stress enough how much journaling has improved my mental health. When I write down my thoughts, they no longer stick around in my mind. It all goes into writing, and I can just close the book. I never go back to reread anything; I simply write what I’m thinking and close the book.
... Read moreIt's a feeling I know all too well – that gnawing regret over decisions made, or paths untaken, simply because 'I didn't know any better back then.' We’ve all looked back at certain moments, wishing we had the wisdom we possess today. It’s incredibly easy to judge our past selves with the information and experience we've gained over time. But you know what? That's exactly why we need to practice giving ourselves grace, especially for the things only time, growth, and experience could possibly teach us.
Think about it: how could you have known then what you know now? It’s an impossible expectation to place on yourself. The journey of life is one of constant learning and evolving. Every step, every stumble, every lesson learned shapes who we are today. Holding onto regret for what you couldn't have known is like blaming a seedling for not being a fully grown tree. It simply wasn’t its time.
This is where the power of self-compassion really comes into play to 'Save Your Mental' state. When I find myself dwelling on those 'if only I knew' moments, I try to shift my perspective. Instead of beating myself up, I practice acknowledging my past self with kindness. I remind myself that I was doing the best I could with the resources, knowledge, and emotional capacity I had at that very moment.
Journaling, as I mentioned, is an absolute game-changer here. It's not just about venting daily thoughts; it can be a powerful tool for self-forgiveness. Try writing a letter to your past self. Not one of criticism, but one of understanding and empathy. Tell that past you that it's okay, that you understand why they made those choices, and that everything led to valuable lessons. You might even want to write an entry about what you have learned since then, transforming those 'unknowns' into clear insights. This practice helps me put things into perspective and consciously release that burden.
For me, prayer also offers immense solace during these times. When I pray, I'm essentially surrendering that burden of past mistakes and unknowns to a higher power. It’s a way of saying, 'I did my best, and now I'm learning and moving forward.' It helps me trust that even the most challenging experiences contribute to a larger plan, fostering a sense of peace that truly 'exceeds anything we can understand.' This spiritual release is crucial for my overall mental well-being and helps me embrace the present.
That morning stroll? It's not just for stress relief; it’s a moment for reflection and acceptance. As I walk, I consciously let go of the need to have perfect foresight. I focus on the beauty around me, on being present in the moment. It’s a gentle reminder that life unfolds, and we learn along the way. This mindful practice helps ground me and prevents me from getting stuck in a loop of regret.
Ultimately, forgiving yourself for not knowing what only time could teach is a profound act of self-love and essential for your mental well-being. It’s about accepting your human journey, acknowledging your growth, and embracing the imperfect, yet beautiful, process of becoming. It allows you to let go of the past and step into your future with a lighter heart and stronger sense of peace. Remember, your journey is unique, and every lesson learned contributes to the incredible person you are becoming. Keep practicing that grace, you deserve it!
